AMC The Walking Dead Season 2...
The first half is godawful, I don't know if it is because they fired Darabont and there was a scramble that took some time to resolve, but there is some painful character drama beats that make anything in the first season look downright Mamet by comparison. However, by the last half of the season, the quality of the show picks up, there appear to be actual stakes once again and things get less Little House on the Prairie and more Night of the Living Dead.
Currently unavailable on DVD/Blu Ray is this decent all-black take on the Vietnam war,as a quartet of black soldiers(Allan Payne[THE PERFECT STORM,NEW JACK CITY],Eddie Griffin[DUECE BIGALOW:MALE GIGOLO,THE LAST BOY SCOUT],Vonte Sweet[PREDATOr 2,MENACE 2 SOCIETY]),including their commanding officer(Joe Morton[JUSTICE LEAGUE,THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHE PLANET]),struggle their way through making it through a heavily Vietcon-filled section of Vietnam as a mentally unstable white soldier(Roger Floyd[INSTINCT,DREAM TRAP]) from another unit joins them after his unit is wiped out, leading to further complication in their survival. Even if this film is a bit late to the game, given how Vietnam war films were popular in the 80s,writer/director Preston A. Whitmore II(CROSSOVER,TRUE TO THE GAME) basically sticks with the four black soldiers in their quest to make it…
USING THIS FOR THE SHOW FROM AMC:
while this show was always kinda stupid it was a bonding point for my dad and i, kinda sad it's over
also jeffery dean morgan 😍😍
Even though there's not a single zombie in this film, I don't feel robbed and it's not that bad for, you know, something without zombies.
I’m using this as my review for The Walking Dead tv show since Letterboxd only lets you review marvel shows for some reason. Some opening thoughts: Andrew Lincoln absolutely crushes it as Rick. Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan is heaven sent. Other standout characters are Carol, Daryl, Maggie, Glenn, Herschel, Ezekiel, Dwight, and Shane. Steven Yeun will forever be my man crush everyday.
Season 1 is phenomenal. Some of the best television ever put to the small screen. Amazing. Never a moment that doesn’t matter or one that is dull. Great debut season.
Season 2 is the most boring season. Ya the writing isn’t as bad as some of the later seasons, but at least the later seasons aren’t as…
Quickie Review
Universal Studios is a little stingy when it comes to the Savoy Pictures titles that they have rights to. They'll release some on physical and digital media formats (A Bronx Tale, Tales From The Hood & Serial Mom are released on both formats) while their other movies are still floating around in limbo without a recent physical or digital release. One of them is this movie and the only way to watch it digitally is through the STARZ app and it's a good thing that I caught it there, otherwise I would've probably forgotten about this one. Anyway, billed as "the first movie about the black experience in Vietnam", this action-drama from the producers of New Jack City and Jason's…
I remember reading about this one years ago and tucking it away in the back of my mind as a potential little hidden gem that I wanted to get my hands on at some point.
As it turns out, I was wrong about that. I like Joe Morton a lot as an actor and Eddie Griffin & Allen Payne are also doing what they can to try to save this thing in the quieter, flashback moments. But the action is too slow and sloppy, shot in an amateurish fashion. It touches on societal issues via these flashbacks, but never more than at a surface level.
Hard to compete as a Vietnam War movie with poor production values and a weak script, when there are so many other very good-to-amazing movies about ‘Nam out there already.
