Graeme Blundell The Australian Comer...delivers a stunning performance, playing on many levels at once, her growing disbelief as she understands she has spent much of her prime so isolated, convincing and heartbreaking. Aug 5, 2016 Full Review Inkoo Kang MTV Despite the intentional opacity of Comer's character in many scenes, she is fantastic, delivering an intensely physical performance that illustrates how often trauma manifests in the body. Jul 1, 2016 Full Review Gwen Ihnat AV Club It's just a pale, murky example of how an artistic surface can't gloss over an unconvincing foundation of plot and characters underneath. Rated: C- Jun 27, 2016 Full Review Sarah Doran Radio Times The premise for BBC3's first big online drama release is simple: kidnapped girl miraculously escapes her captor after years living in fear. But the story that unfolds is much more complicated. Apr 26, 2017 Full Review Eddie Strait The Daily Dot The crime itself is supposed to be one of the major alluring elements of Thirteen, but the more we learn about the case the less enticing it becomes. Apr 25, 2017 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh PopMatters One of the great things about this series is that it forces you to confront your own lazy habits of thought, like judging characters in circumstances about which you know nothing. DL W I was disappointed with this series. We never really find out what really happened in the past with the abducted girl. The police were horrible at their jobs. There was very little depth to the characters. It did keep my interest enough to finish the mini-series. I just found if to be very “bland”. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Anisia G As others have said, the plot was initially intriguing and J. Comer portray a wonderful performance, with great depths and nuances. But what strucks the most is the terrible police procedures and behaviours towards a victim. Ivy was held captive for THIRTEEN years and police (especially the police woman lead inspector) seem to expect her to behave LOGICALLY, in a way that was professional, rapid, efficient. She just escaped all by herself, for god's sake! She is questioned, scrutinized, held accountable for things out of her control. I was mesmerized by Jodie Comer's performance and at the same time horrified by what she had to go through AFTER her escape and imprisonment. They doubted everything she said, made very unprofessional comments about her responses ("odd" who would say ODD to a victim's recalled of her trauma and rape??), pressured her to be constantly available and ready to talk and re-live her trauma shortly after it happened "because there's another victim to be found, don't you care about her? You seem not to care". Really? Are you really blaming the victim for your short-comings as the police force and putting all the responsibility on her? No psychological support, no comprehension, no empathy. I was horrified and still am, and just for the victim treatment I will not recommend this series to anyone. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I actually quite enjoyed this show, and Jodie Comer never fails to miss the mark in the depth of her acting. I think she did a great job of portraying trauma responses. HOWEVER, the biggest let down personally was the lack of trauma-informed police/social services/mental health provisions and it was a shame because it was genuinely frustrating. Of course it's a work of fiction but there was little to no understanding of trauma or it's impacts, and no sensitivity towards Ivy that I spent a lot of my time annoyed by the lack of compassion from services when she comes back rather than being able to invest fully in her story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This was waaaaay too long. It could have been a 2hr movie or about half as many episodes and would have been much better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Whilst episode one starts strongly it quickly follows all those annoying and stereotypical directions that most of us have seen before. It's a lazy production from the casting to the so-called dramatic twists. The victim is female (rarely a male), the main police paring are in a relationship, mum and dad have affairs, victim get captured and then retaken in a ridiculous but obvious way, police conveniently lose track of victim, victim manages to escape…I could go on and on! The writers also make the victim character quiet and not forthcoming with information (yes, I know this can be the case) but it's more in line with the number of episodes needed to prolong the story than her character. Am sure all the actors have read much better scripts in the careers! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The story of a disappeared girl is all too familiar, but this show starts where most end: when the girl (now woman) escapes. The question then is how to make sense of the life she once had, plus some extra drama to keep the suspense. Sometimes it seemed the detectives were being unrealistically harsh in their judgment of the escaped woman after some details of her capture came to light, but then again law enforcement has a notoriously bad record for dealing with sexual assault and emotionally complex issues. And in the end that is what makes the show most interesting: you don't know quite what is happening with the main character until she reveals more in the end, and why should we - who could ever truly understand such a thing who has not lived it? But this show offers an interesting glimpse. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
