Aleksandra Katarzyna was the wife of Franciszek Ksawery Branicki and the daughter of Wasyl von Engelhardt and Maria Potemkina.
Henryk Mościcki claimed that she was the first-born, illegitimate daughter of the Grand Duchess, the future Empress Catherine, and Count Sergei Saltykov. According to other data, considered to be rumors, she was supposed to be the illegitimate daughter of Catherine II from her relationship with Count Sergei Saltykov - immediately after birth, Empress Elizabeth was to exchange her for a male infant of unknown (or "Chukhon", i.e. Estonian) origin, who was recognized as a son Catherine, later Emperor Paul I Romanov.
She was the niece and later one of the lovers of Grigory Potemkin, the favorite of Catherine the Great.
