The TV host was born on 12 April 1971 (age 51 as of 2022) in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. She is the daughter of Rosa Elizabeth Doherty (mother) and John Thomas Doherty Jr. (father). Her mother worked as a beauty parlour owner, and her father was a mortgage consultant.

Shannen comes from Irish ancestry on her father’s side and Scottish, English, and Scots-Irish ancestries from her mother’s side. She also has a brother named Sean Doherty.
