Am I wrong for killing a mouse?

Go easy on me Reddit I already feel guilty enough. Anyways, the house I’m renting currently had a mouse problem (for context the house is over 100 years old). Despite all the cleaning we’ve still caught a few since.

On Wednesday, I came home for lunch and heated up some soup. While I poured it into a bowl I saw a mouse at my feet. I nearly jumped out of my skin due to that.

Fast forward to a few hours later. I take my little Maltese mixed mutt out after I get off work and decompress for probably 20 minutes before I feed her. During that time I hear scratch sounds in the kitchen.

As it turns out, a mouse is in the sink. That’s when had to make a decision. Do I A) catch the mouse with a glove, release in the back of where I live, and risk the mouse coming back in or B) kill the mouse. As quickly and as painlessly as possible.

I chose B. After 3 quick blows with a hammer it was dead. I feel so horrible but I figured the justification of keeping my dog safe was enough. Am I wrong?

What type of mouse is a danger to even a small dog? 🤔

And hammering it to death? Like dude, you could have just put out poison like other people do.

Poison doesn't always work though. I tried it a while ago, and the rodents actually seemed to enjoy it... and weren't affected at all. It took glue traps to get my home pest-free.

No, keep killing them

Mice and rats spread several nasty diseases. They also have no control over their body functions, so they pee and poop on everything they walk across. You are protecting yourself as much as your dog.

If you put a House Mouse outside it will either 1) run right back on or 2) suffer a much worse death than you gave it via some predator.

Cleaning and getting rid of harborage is a good first step, but you (or your landlord) needs to do more to eliminate the problem. Any hole you can put a pinky finger through is large enough to allow a mouse to enter and should be sealed. Once that's done, traps and bait should be put out where the mice are known to run. Talk to your landlord about hiring an exterminator as well.

I mean I shoot neighborhood cats when I get drunk sometimes and don’t feel remorse. You should probably just get over it. It’s just an animal
