Izzy the 1996 Summer Olympics mascot
[removed]
Izzy was kindly dubbed "The Sperm In Sneakers" by the media.
I would love to have heard Monica Kaufman to say that name with a straight face.
Or Amanda Davis to slur it.
Sick anchor burn, yo
Dylon spits hot fire
Jizzy?
Georgian here too. Wasn't his previous name something like, "Whatizzit" ?
I seem to remember a naming contest or something for it...Terrible mascot, but I guess people still remember it, so something was done right. Hah.
Sometimes being remembered isn't the best thing.
you mean springy?
MSPaint was a glorious tool circa 1996.
I agree! Haha
I always feel bad for the artists that are stuck with the task of coming up with these olympic mascots. You want to know why they almost always suck? It's a classic example of design by committee. I'd bet that if you looked up the original round of concepts from the artist you'd see a dramatically different take on this guy. But no... Ethel from accounting was selected to be on the mascot committee, and she likes Rainbow Brite. So go back and use 9 more colors. And Ted from marketing thinks you need to make his eyebrows look like lightning bolts, so give that a shot would you, sport? etc and so on.
Having said that, I'm 50/50 on the chances that the illustrator actually keeps this character design in their portfolio of work to showcase.
Agreed. I work in advertising and always cringe when the client comes back and says, "I love it! But let me show some people around the office. Oh and the board of directors. Any my kids." For the love of god, STOP. We are professionals - let us do the job you hired us to do. You don't need to have everyone you've ever met weigh in.
And they come back to you with, "can you make it...pop more?" Or "can you do something a little more creative." Fuck you client, what does that mean.
My favorite so far - and this is no joke - "Can you make it more appealing?" As if unappealing was what we were going for. For the love of god, USE YOUR WORDS!!!! What exactly do you mean by appealing?
I feel we should rastafy him by ... ten percent or so.

I remember Sydney's being relatively tame and appropriate.
You're right! Other Olympic mascots are just as terrible.
I had some people who asked me to design a logo for their community centre. When I showed them what I had designed, they wanted me to add five more things to it and then pulled out a bunch of logos they had made from a logo generator and told me to mix all of them together instead. Every file they sent me for the design was a word document. It was a nightmare.
With experience you learn how to smile warmly, say 'sure thing', make the changes no matter how bad it is, and cash the check when it arrives. Keep the stuff you prefer for your own portfolio and disregard the rest after the job is over. :-)
Its the small details that piss me off. This thing raises so many more questions than it answers. The tail. Why the fuck does it have a tail?
Stars as eyes? Did they really need to put that in? Then they went ahead and made him cross-eyed. He looks drunk.
What is his general shape? Is he a genie? He looks like a wannabe 7up guy.
I am just going to skip past the lightning eyebrows.
Lastly, his big fucking mouth. Its just gross. He looks like he is burping.
This should answer your many questions http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izzy_%28mascot%29
Did you know he had a super nintendo game? I owned it. I remember it being a pretty decent platformer.
Yes I did! I rented it a few times from my local Blockbuster.
Izzy's Olympic Quest, at least I think that is what it was called. I remember playing it on the Sega Chanel.
Who films themselves getting a game over, honestly?
A pipe bomb would have made more sense
"Eric Rudolph, while you sit there, hopefully as uncomfortably as possible, I want you to listen to me..."
hahaha that's great!
Too soon! Haha
Was anyone else a member of the Izzy Club?!
Unfortunately no 😕
The year of my birth
Stop it you're making me feel old.
Dude I was negative 3 for these Olympics... My parents went to some of the events after their honeymoon.
I lived in Atlanta in 1996 and went to the Games. Had a blast, doubt I'll ever experience anything like that again in my lifetime.
The 1996 Olympic website was my first experience with website that didn't crash with the heavy load of people coming to visit it. During the games, the tech sponsor (IBM) invested a TON of money into the site to make sure it didn't get crushed at peak times.
Also, was supposed to be at the Olympic Park the night of the bombing. Oddly, I wasn't feeling like making it here, so stayed home.
I left Atlanta in 1998 and have only ONCE visited the Olympic Park. I even have a brick there.
Damn interesting story! Did you by any chance make your way into the Olympic Village?
What the fuck is that abomination?
'Murica
Springy
I have a shirt of this.
Pic?
My parents still have an Izzy Christmas ornament.
I love that the Summer Games had a winter ornament.
I think I once saw a Saturday morning cartoon of this. I can't find it on YouTube. But I remember it being very 90's.
ATL!
I remember colouring that thing in at primary school
I had a fucking sweet Atlanta Olympics baseball cap from McDonald's. 95% sure it was maroon with a suede brim.. super styling.
I remember he had his own roller coaster at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA.
I actually still have stuffed animal of him
Give the south's statistically significant interest in meth this seems oddly up to date.
Where will you be......when the acid takes hold?
I just looked up the mascots from my hometown's turn at hosting the Winter Olympics, and I'm pretty sure they took them straight out of Song of the South.
Those look like boxing gloves, but I know they're not 😑
