My favourite Rick Derringer album. It rocks all the way through.

Three years removed from his last official studio LP for Blue Sky, the hit 'n' miss _Face to Face_ recording, Rick Derringer returned in 1983 with _Good Dirty Fun_. Issued the same year as the DNA _Party Tested_ failure, which featured lil' Rick collaborating with road worn drummer Carmine Appice, as well as keyboardist Duane Hitching and bassist Jimmy Johnson, _Good Dirty Fun_ has it's moments, but doesn't compare to Derringer's mid-seventie's work.
Issued by Passport Records, _Good Dirty Fun_ opens strong with the biting "I Play Guitar", and the hot rockin' "Party at the Hotel". Throughout four-minute "Party at the Hotel", Derringer is all over the fretboard of his trusty guitar. The amped-up cut comes off as R.D.'s call 'n' response to Ted "Armed 'n' Ready" Nugent's way-out "Wango Tango".
Side one of _Good Dirty Fun_ is where the action is, despite the filler shot of "Shake Me". "Lesson Learned" is a cool, mid-tempo number that is accented by the All-American Boy's bad ass guitar solo. The stomping "Hardball", which packs a big chorus and a huge drum beat from the kit of Jimmy Wilcox, brings the the album to the half-way mark.
Unfortunately, the flip side of _Good Dirty Fun_ fails to build on the momentum established by four of the first five cuts. The weak rockabilly swing of "Mistake Magnifique" initiates the slide. The weak AOR offerings of "White Heat", and "When Love Attacks" with Bonnie Tyler on backing vocals, continue the descent. Side two of _Good Dirty Fun_ is salvaged by the effects driven "Numb", while the funk 'n' rollin' "Just Wanna Dance" closes out the album.
KNOCK IT BACK!

I agree with "stevebbeck" that it`s a pity that
Rick left pop-music after this album. BUT I don`t
agree with him about another thing: I don`t like this
album!!! It´s under-produced and with few songs worth
to remember. What´s even worse is the silliness of
the songtitles and the words to the songs! For who was
this effort made? Anyway, Rick is always Rick, so...even
a lousy album is worth 2 stars!!!

This was a fine effort. It's a shame that it was on Passport Records, because with a major label behind it this album could have made quite a ripple in the charts This is Rick Derringer in a heavy metal pop rock mode, and it suited him in a very commercial and palatable way. "Radio friendly" I think is the industry term.
The songs are all well crafted, with stand outs being_"Shake Me !"_, _"Party At The Hotel"_and_"White Heat"_, all three songs with catchy insidious melodies, strong choruses, and a guitar hook phrase at every turn.
_"Good Dirty Fun"_ actually marked a change in direction for Derringer, who took to producing other acts on a more regular basis after this album, as it was far more lucrative for him. He soon after the release of this album produced Weird Al's hits, and made money hand over fist from that.
Rick went back to the blues after this recording, and never really got back into recording commercial pop rock songs again.
This was his last rock 'n roll album.
