The cast for the new Apple TV+ mystery series “Sugar” is stacked: Colin Farrell plays the lead character John Sugar, who crosses paths with James Cromwell, Kirby, Anna Gunn and Amy Ryan in his search for a missing heir.
Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles of “City of God” fame gives the Los Angeles-set series a dreamy noir look, while “Thor” and “I Am Legend” screenwriter Mark Protosevich created and wrote the intriguing take on the genre.
Here’s who plays who in “Sugar,” which premiered its first two episodes on April 5, and where you might have seen them before.
Colin Farrell as John Sugar
The “Banshees of Inisherin” star plays detective John Sugar, who’s fluent in several languages, handy with a gun and as determined as a dog with a bone when he’s on a case. Multiple warnings to stop looking for a movie producer’s missing granddaughter have no effect on him.
Kirby as Ruby
Kirby, who is sometimes billed under her full name of Kirby Howell-Baptiste, previously appeared in “The Good Place,” “Killing Eve,” “Veronica Mars” and also played Death of the Endless on Netflix’s “Sandman.” Ruby serves as the “Q” to Sugar’s Bond, providing him with vintage guns, intel and sage advice.
James Cromwell as Jonathan Siegel
The “Babe” star also played Ewan Roy, the estranged brother of Brian Cox’s patriarch Logan Roy on “Succession.” Well-known credits also include “The Green Mile,” “Six Feet Under” and “L.A. Confidential.” Here, he is fictional movie producer Jonathan Siegel, who hires Sugar to find his missing granddaughter, Olivia. The Siegels are legends in Hollywood and Sugar finds few people are willing to talk to him about the case.
Amy Ryan as Melanie Mackintosh
The “Gone Baby Gone” Oscar nominee, who also played Steve Martin’s bassoonist neighbor Jan Bellows in the first season of “Only Murders in the Building,” plays reclusive rock star Melanie Mackintosh. She knows most of the secrets of the Siegel family and would be an important ally for Sugar, if he can convince her to help him.
Sydney Chandler as Olivia Siegel
The actress, who played Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde in the Sex Pistols series “Pistol,” plays Olivia, the missing granddaughter of Hollywood royalty. In her absence, we get to know her through her social media videos, including one in which she says she’s scared that someone is watching her.
Dennis Boutsikaris as Bernie Siegel
Boutsikaris played attorney Rich Schweikart on “Better Call Saul.” Here, he plays Bernie Siegel, a producer of cheap, schlocky movies. He’s surprisingly unconcerned about Olivia’s disappearance and is sure she’ll turn up soon.
Anna Gunn as Margit
The “Breaking Bad” Emmy winner plays famed former actress Margit, ex-wife of Bernie Siegel and overprotective mom to son David. She points out that the missing Olivia is only David’s half-sister and, therefore, not her concern.
Nate Corddry as David Siegel
The actor, whose credits include “Mom,” “Fosse/Verdon” and “Perry Mason,” plays David, aka “Davey” Siegel, a former child star trying to make a comeback.
Alex Hernandez as Kenny
The actor’s previous credits include “Hemlock Grove,” “The Peripheral,” and “UnREAL.” He plays Kenny, who’s always happy to provide extra muscle to pal David when needed.
Paula Andrea Placido as Charlie
The actress, who also appeared in the Peacock limited series “Apples Never Fall,” plays Charlie, John Sugar’s assistant.
Paul Schulze as Miller
Ruby’s mysterious connection first shows up in the “Boy in the Corner” episode. He warns her to stop Sugar from digging too far into the investigation. The actor has appeared on numerous TV series, including “24,” “The Sopranos,” “Nurse Jackie” and “Suits.”
Eric Lange as Stallings
Stallings is a ruthless human trafficker who Sugar suspects is behind Olivia’s disappearance. Lange previously played Detective Holcomb on HBO’s “Perry Mason,” General Whitcroft on “The Man in the High Castle” and Lyle Mitchell in “Escape at Dannemora.”
Jason Butler Harner as Henry
Henry is an ally of Sugar’s, someone with doctoring skills he can call when he’s in trouble. Harner is also known for his roles on “Ozark,” “Rabbit Hole,” “Scandal” and “Ray Donovan.”
Cameron Cowperthwaite as Ryan Pavich
Sugar encounters Ryan during his search for Olivia. The actor is known for playing Speed Wagon on “American Horror Story: Cult” and various characters on “American Horror Stories.” He also played Steven Hicks on the Netflix series “Monster” and Monty on the Prime Video series “Fallout.”
The first seven episodes of “Sugar” are out now on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes debuting on the following Fridays.
