Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs Hardcover – Download: Adobe Reader, June 1, 2011

The world through Linda's eyes: A retrospective of Linda McCartney's life and photography In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River; her fresh, candid photographs of the band were far superior to the formal shots made by the band’s official photographer, and she was instantly on the way to making a name for herself as a top rock ’n’ roll photographer. In May 1968, with her portrait of Eric Clapton, she entered the record books as the first female photographer to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. During her tenure as the leading photographer of the late 1960s’ musical scene, she captured many of rock’s most important musicians on film, including Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors, and the Grateful Dead. In 1967, Linda went to London to document the "Swinging Sixties," where she met Paul McCartney at the Bag ’O Nails club and subsequently photographed The Beatles during a launch event for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Paul and Linda fell in love, and were married on March 12, 1969. For the next three decades, until her untimely death, she devoted herself to her family, vegetarianism, animal rights, and photography.

From her early rock ’n’ roll portraits, through the final years of The Beatles, via touring with Wings to raising four children with Paul, Linda captured her whole world on film. Her shots range from spontaneous family pictures to studio sessions with
Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, as well as artists Willem de Kooning and Gilbert and George. Always unassuming and fresh, her work displays a warmth and feeling for the precise moment that captures the essence of any subject. Whether photographing her children, celebrities, animals, or a fleeting moment of everyday life, she did so without pretension or artifice.

This retrospective volume—selected from her archive of over 200,000 images—is produced in close collaboration with Paul McCartney and their children. Included are forewords by Paul, Stella, and Mary McCartney. As such, it is a moving personal journal and a lasting testament to Linda’s talent.

I wasn't expecting this book to be of such quality, nor as large, for the price! Instead of some hastily put-together collection, you are presented with a lovely, art book. Full of scenes from the sixties. As Linda's other book, Sixties, cannot be sent to Australia and is seemingly impossible to get a hold of, I bought this volume thinking it would at least have some of the same pictures. It has but it also has many photos of Paul and the family, aswell as notes written by Paul and two of her daughters. Regardless of how she may be viewed by much of the rock world, i dig her photographs and her spirit. Both of which, i think are captured in this volume!

This is a great book even though Linda was an amateur photographer, so do not expect the quality of Jim Marshall or Annie Leibovitz. Take interesting photos have access to be close to Jagger, Lennon, Harrison, Morrison etc. is not very difficult, however, some photographs have great charm of spontaneity.
It is always interesting to see photographs of The Rolling Stones or The Beatles, of not having them or not have been the wife of Paul, this book would go unnoticed, but the reality is that they are there and worth buying this book...

I am surprised another book has come out of Linda McCartney's photos because of all the other books that Linda released when she was alive. There are several pictures in this book that have been released in those other books, but if you don't have many of them then this will be a nice book to have. This is an expensive book so see if you can find it through amazon. You should be able to get if for somewhere close to 40% off. With all the pictures Linda has taken over 40 years it would have been nice to get other pictures that haven't been released before, but this is a great book by a great photographer. Thank you Sir Paul for allowing this book to be released.

Sure she uses the vehicle of the Beatles fame, but then again, they were the people in her life. Her work is stunning and insightful. It is now staying on my shelf as a work of anthropological photography, an important, well photographed view into a time and a culture.
