Boston Latin School Reviews

I've been the running publicist for BLS (Boston Latin School) BLACK (Black Leaders Aspiring for Change and Knowledge) for two years now. I make posts getting the word out about upcoming events. I am the game coordinator, so for fun club meetings I plan out the games to help build community amongst members and officers. On March 1st, 2024 I facilitated a showcase for my club. The theme was Afro Futurism. I was able to contact OrigiNations Dance group to perform at the showcase for free. I've gained organizational skills and discipline as a student from engaging with this club. I would hope for more diversity in academics instead of just in clubs. This school year they've added Modern Asian Studies and AP African American Studies. I would want to see more cultural courses available and mandatory to make the school environment more accepting to diverse groups of people.
The only redeeming qualities at this school are diversity, safety and the nurses’ office. Teachers expect students to teach themselves and complicate the learning process with mundane, rigid, useless tasks. Unless a student is a prodigy, tutored, or a masochist, all math is at this school is awful - extreme expectations combined with math teachers who fail at every turn to meet students where they are. Administrators protect their colleagues at all costs leading to a known revolving door of legitimate complaints involving the same staff. Overall it is a grim, sterile, unwelcoming environment where students are held to much, much higher standards than all staff members.
Boston Latin School is an amazing school where many student go on and attend top universities after graduating. I liked how many resources the school had and the fact that they seemed to have faculty that were well versed in many different skills. There really seemed to be a place for everyone in the school through the different clubs, sports, art, and music opportunities that were offered. I attended the school for 6 years and it was helpful to have that consistency throughout my middle and high school experience with staff that really knew me. The worst part of my experience was that there didn't seem to be much standardization over what is taught by different teachers when they were teaching the same subject. This made it hard because it seemed that a students' grades were very dependent on the teacher, not the students efforts that they put in.
