David Oyelowo Reveals New Details For ‘The Return of the Rocketeer’ Disney+ Movie

Last August, it was revealed that Disney+ is reviving The Rocketeer character in a new movie which will be titled The Return of the Rocketeer.

David and Jessica Oyelowo will be producing the film under their Yoruba Saxon banner. Brigham Taylor is also producing alongside Yoruba Saxon. Mortal Media exec producing. This is the first film under Yoruba Saxon’s first-look deal with Disney.  The script will be penned by Ed Ricourt (Now You See Me).

At the time of the initial report, it was said that David Oyelowo could also end up starring in the film. Not much has been revealed since then but we now have some new details on the project.  In a recent interview with The Wrap, Oyelowo shared that the movie is still in the script stage and no director has been hired yet.  You can see what Oyelowo said below:

“I was a big fan of the first one. Actually had the poster up in my bedroom as a teenager. It’s a beloved property over [at Disney], so to be trusted with it is a real privilege. We’re going to take care of the fans of the original and hopefully bring in a whole new fanbase. In our film, he’s going to be an ex-Tuskegee airman, so it’s still in that 1940s milieu. We know we have to adhere to the things that people loved about the first one. But that was 30 years ago, so we want to make a film that’s going to resonate for the next 30 years and especially for the now. That’s the needle we have to thread and we’re working hard to do so.”

In case you aren’t familiar, the 1991 cult classic film was based on the indie comic book series “The Rocketeer” by Dave Stevens.  Set in the 1930s, it follows the story of a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord who, after finding an experimental jet pack, becomes a crime fighter called The Rocketeer.  The movie went on to earn almost $47M at the domestic box office.

Deadline reports that The Return of the Rocketeer will have an all-new creative directive with Ricourt’s story focusing on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the mantle of The Rocketeer.

You can currently stream the original 1991 The Rocketeer movie on Disney+ as well as Season 1 of the animated series.
