Aptly titled, Tame Impala’s third studio record Currents is a warm sonic wave straight from Australian waters, combining neo-psychedelia and alternative dance. Sometimes the wave washes over you, and sometimes you find yourself surfing atop it. The album marks Tame Impala’s venture deeper into the ever-growing world of electronic music, but doesn’t stray too far from their rock roots.
The band officially released two singles prior to the record’s release, the first of which being “Let It Happen” on March 11, 2015, followed closely by “‘Cause I’m A Man” on April 7th, 2015. While it was not released as a radio single, the track “Disciples” was publicized by Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker via his Reddit AMA on April 30th, 2015. Following its success on the record, “The Less I Know The Better” was released as a radio single on November 29th, 2015.
Currents was almost universally lauded by critics, and was nominated for “Best Alternative Music Album” at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
Tame Impala shared a video featuring some footage while in the making creating Currents.
The album’s release date was pushed back two months and Kevin Parker revealed he’s a perfectionist when it comes to his music:
I thought I was going to be able to do it. I spent the whole day before the flight running off the final mixes — I’m the eternal unrealistic optimist; I’ll always thinks something’s possible when there’s completely no chance.
I maintain that some kind of pressure is what drives you. I hate being creative under time restraints, for me that’s a real deadener but I would never get anything done if I didn’t have a deadline. — source
