85% Tomatometer 272 Reviews 82% Audience Score 250+ Ratings Based on the same-titled bestseller by Liane Moriarty, "Big Little Lies" weaves a darkly comedic tale of murder and mischief in the tranquil beachfront town of Monterey, Calif. Amidst doting moms, successful husbands, beautiful children, and stunning homes exists a community fueled by rumors and divided into haves and have-nots, exposing fractured relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors. Told through the eyes of three mothers -- Madeline, Celeste and Jane -- the series' narrative explores society's myths regarding perfection and its romanticization of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent "mothers of Monterey." Read More Read Less Watch on Fandango at Home Buy Now

      Critics Consensus

Gorgeous and gripping, Big Little Lies's second season doubles down on the dark humor and gives its impressive cast even more juicy drama to chew on -- especially an excellent Meryl Streep.

Caroline Reilly Bitch Media Big Little Lies' depiction of domestic violence and trauma is so powerful precisely because it allows its leads to be more than victims, more than wives, more than mothers. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Aline Dolinh Bitch Media Yet for all the series' careful, at times heartrending attention to the nuances of trauma, misogyny, and emotional dissatisfaction, the distinctive pleasure of Big Little Lies also resides in its soapiness. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR A lot feels unrealistic here. Celeste is in therapy, but her kids, who are fighting all the time, are not. And characters drop lines that underline their every feeling, as if the audience wouldn't get it otherwise. Nov 23, 2019 Full Review Sonali Kokra Firstpost Without Meryl Streep, Big Little Lies would truly be unwatchable. May 15, 2024 Full Review Swetha Ramakrishnan Firstpost Now that we're at the end of season 2 of Big Little Lies, it is important to question if we needed a second season in the first place... Oct 9, 2023 Full Review Valerie Ettenhofer Film School Rejects Characterization trumps plot twists every time, and the series is better for it. Above all else, the show explores the pain that families inflict on one another. Apr 19, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Season 2 of Big Little Lies fails where season 1 succeeded. I found it easy to lose focus and investment in the story. The ending of season 1 was beautiful, and season 2 ruins it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Mikaël O As talented as the cast is, the second season proved Jean-Marc Vallée was the genius behind the first one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/24 Full Review Gabrielle C I didn't enjoy this season as much as season one. I think they should have left well enough alone with season one. I may be the only person who didn't like Bonnie's storyline and disliked Bonnie's mother even more than Mary-Louse. I think Season 3, which will be 6 years later, is another bad idea. The kids will all be grown. The world has changed a lot since 2019. Will this soap opera stand the test of time with another season post pandemic? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Savannah G It was a solid follow up but really the first season brought it home for me - you could have ended it on season 1 and be happy about it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Georgan G Great acting, especially Meryl Streep! Her character is the most screwed up, yet she pulls it off with aplomb. The writing continues to be excellent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review Jherr Love this series. Best thing on TV since sex and the city ended. Anything with Reese Witherspoon (or produced by her) is a hit. I love her. Definitely watch this series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
