Derby County have boosted their squad by completing the signing of striker Martyn Waghorn on a one-year deal.

The 33-year-old, who played for the Rams from 2018-2021, was a free agent after leaving Coventry in the summer.

He has been training with the Rams and was at Pride Park on Saturday to watch his new side lose their League One opener against Wigan Athletic.

"There was a lot of things happening behind the scenes in terms of other clubs," he told BBC Radio Derby.

"But as soon as I knew of the interest and that the club were happy to progress things and have that conversation, there was only one real thought on my mind, and that was coming back home and getting this club to where it needs to be."

Waghorn made 13 appearances for the Sky Blues last season before joining Huddersfield Town in January, where he played a further 13 times to help Neil Warnock's side avoid relegation.

"I wasn't quite getting the game time I needed (at Coventry), in and out with different situations, different reasons, injuries, form," he added.

"It (the loan to Huddersfield) was all part of me trying to get back out there and test myself.

"It was a difficult couple of years, but it made me learn a lot about myself. I really had to dig deep at times to see what the issues were, what was going on, and in difficult moments that's when you learn a lot about yourself.

"It's been a really important time for me in the off season to stop and reflect, address a lot of things in the footballing side and hopefully I'm in a good place now to come back and correct those."
