      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Woody Allen's 50th film, Coup de Chance adds yet another creative rebound to the writer-director's oeuvre with a charming thriller that makes up in wit what it lacks in surprises.

Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List It is of a piece with Woody’s late-life output, a tale of coincidence, chance, and murder that charms at its best and at its worst evaporates upon contact with your eyeballs. Rated: 2.5/4 May 10, 2024 Full Review Natalia Winkelman Boston Globe The film’s closing is abrupt and maybe too tidy, but “Coup de Chance” is still a clever little thriller. It displays an admirable economy of storytelling, and its jazz-heavy soundtrack helps maintain a jaunty mood. Rated: 2/4 Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Peter Travers ABC News This French bonbon, Woody Allen’s best reviewed film in years, is no career landmark. But its blend of humor and homicide shows Allen, 88, still moving forward, creating the kind of film he made his name on, the kind that makes you laugh till it hurts. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Bill Newcott The Saturday Evening Post At 88, Allen is something beyond merely a master of his craft. His camera is consistently in exactly the right place...His scenes end at precisely the right moment...And most importantly, perhaps no writer/director is as economical a storyteller. Rated: 4/5 Apr 29, 2024 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk there are isolated moments that are quite great, but much of it is also depressingly pro forma, moving through the motions of a familiar set of characters and situations in the service of a philosophical point that is clever, but hardly invigorating Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 25, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider Unlike the filmmaker’s more inspired efforts, the comedy in Coup de Chance is a nonstarter, the drama rote, the characters suffering from serious plausibility issues. Marsha A good quintessential Woody Allen film though not as good as some of his best movies. Creative, atmospheric, and good music. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Kathy L I wanted to like this movie but hardy any Paris scenery, all subtitles, no real development of feeling for the affair to get together, not enough character development so you cared for any of them either way. Unfortunately just passed the time lots of streaming shows are tons better then this trip to the movie theater. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Joel Good plot, characters and dialog, but TERRIBLE translations killed it. French speakers I know laughed out loud and often at spots where we just scratched our heads. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Adrianne W Delightful little movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Joyce H Great cast ensemble, gorgeous cinematography, iconic Allen-esgue screenplay, love the jazz sound score. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Lenore B Excellent. Best film Woody Allen has ever made. Wonderful mystery Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
