The area
Address
Neighborhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

It all started when I paid extra for second or third row seats. Guess what?! There are only 3 rows!!! And I paid 1000 yen for popcorn on the voyagin website as a special offer for 900g popcorn and drink. The one I got was more of a 100g popcorn. The photo shows their 900g popcorn. after complaining they said that that it was indeed 900g, rather than saying sorry, it was supposed to be 90. A sorry goes a long way. Guess I recommend in the sense that it was loud, colourful and the actors seemed to be having fun, but I don’t like dishonesty.

I knew before going to this it was going to be not very good. I could tell from the pictures and the videos it's all fog and lights to create a smoke screen on a high school song and dance show. And I was not wrong.

I decided to go give it a try because there was a promotion with Drum Tao so the ticket cost about a bowl of ramen.

So the robot restaurant has no robots. There are guys with remote controls following the "floats" to move them around. If the float doesn't work, people push them. There might have been a problem during my show because they kept telling people to turn their wifi and bluetooth off.

The show is mostly dancing to music. The third act consisted of women in this weird skirt and umbrella costume. The men were obviously gawking, half the women were unimpressed and when it came to applause time, almost no one did. I think the men were too scared of their other half to clap their hands.

I generally found this offensive on two levels. First is there are no robots. Second it must be what Japanese people think foreigners want to see and giving them what they want. Either way, yuck.

The drinks were insanely expensive too. ¥1000 for alcoholic bubble tea and ¥800 for non alcoholic... and if you so choose ¥3400 for a tiny bottle of champagne.

It was also very loud so I was glad I brought earplugs with me.

Stay away! This is not a restaurant and the show is loud, time consuming and not good.

You are told to show up 30min before, then you are guided into a waiting lounge where you spend over an hour. This is mostly to get you to spend money on drinks and snacks. You are then let into the showroom where you spend another 20-30min waiting under constant pressure to buy souvenirs, drinks and snacks. You then get 3 short acts with long breaks in between with more pressure to buy stuff.

The sound level is horrible loud and it was physically painful at moments.

This is highly overpriced, overrated and the text book example of a tourist trap designed to force you to spend money on stuff you don’t need. It’s more waiting and very little show.

This is not a restaurant, it is two crammed stalls either side of a stage that serves overpriced food and drink. Show is with large remote controlled props with dancing and colorful costumes. Noise is deafening and I found it not worth the money paid.

The show is just bonkers and had we paid 1/4 the price we would have come away happy but it is very amateurish and completely lacking in robots let alone a restaurant!!! People dressed up or remote controlled carnival floats whose operators you can see are as close as it gets. All the performers are super enthusiastic and we enjoyed parts but the cost just makes you feel ripped off, Broadway or the West End cost similar! The quirky side of Tokyo can be found in much better ways than this. Go to the ticket office before hand and looks at the promo videos and make your own choice.

First off the entertainers certainly put in the energy and kept the lame duck alive.
There are no robots just some very battle worn floats with folks either pushing or using last century controllers to drive, albeit at a pace behind
As for wasting time. Get there at assigned time, then told to come back later, then queue across the road at the “ticket office”, then go to lounge on 3rd floor which is just a holding room of crass colours, nothing more. Entertained by a pretty good singer of Jaz and Swing numbers, band really ordinary.
Then move down to basement via stairs for more queuing then onto the seats.
Show now broken into 20 minute segments between selling more crap food and drinks, of 4 periods. Show tacky, no continuity, just loud, silly and presume exciting. The story line segment with visuals on wall, very trying in all facets of trying.
Loved the tables of Aussies showing how clever they are at loading as many drinks as possible on small tables, so amazing! Very much Bali visiting Tokyo, Japanese so lucky.
Given the large crowd expect parting of yen from foreigners to continue. Yahoo.

What a wild ride. As a group of friends in our mid-twenties, we really should have been significantly more drunk to enjoy this show. It can be quite cringy at times and you’ll find yourself thinking ‘what have I gotten myself in to?’
But as long as you have done your research and don’t go in with too high of expectations, you’ll be okay.
Drinks are reasonably priced. The food is garbage. You’re better off getting dinner somewhere else before the show.

Friends recommended this to me and I went during part of a solo trip. I thought the first act (45 minutes or so?) was really something else and could not stop gawking/smiling. I have to admit, the acts that followed relied less on dance/drum playing and felt a little cheesy/child-like. If I did this again, I’d take friends to the first part of the show and then ditch the first time they allow me to get snacks.

Cheesy, loud and super fun. The actors and performers clearly are enthusiastic and love interacting with the audience. It’s loud. Very loud. But super FUN and Entertaining. Located in the exciting Shinjuku district. Recommend for all tourists.

First off: the ‘robot’ ‘restaurant’ has very little actual robots, and is more of a bar with food than a sit down restaurant. That said, if you’re wanting to have an entertaining evening with a uniquely Japanese flavour than you’re in the right place!

The set pieces were fab and the performers were excellent (even if the plot was...interesting). Honestly, it’s hard to describe exactly what happened, but we definitely had a great time!

The only thing I would mention is that, as we went to the latest show (9:30pm), there were a few patrons who were clearly a little worse for wear and were disruptive to the show as a whole - obviously not the fault of the Robot Restaurant but something I hope they take a harder line against in future.
