Before the shocking news of their split on Monday, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale had long-been considered one of the coolest couples in the world of celebrity.

Here, PEOPLE takes a look at a timeline of their love and life together which resulted in almost 13 years of marriage and three children.

1995: Stefani and Rossdale meet during a 27-month No Doubt tour. They cross paths when Stefani opens for Rossdale’s band Bush in London and the pair embark on a long-distance relationship.

January 2002: After six years of dating and getting permission from her father, Rossdale proposes to Stefani.

September 2002: Nine months after getting engaged, Rossdale and Stefani tie the knot in a 17th-century churchyard in London. Wearing a white and pink Dior gown by John Galliano, the No Doubt singer says her vows in front of 150 guests. The couple have two other nuptials one for Stefani’s family in L.A. and one for friends.

October 2004: The couple are dealt a shocking blow when it’s revealed that Rossdale fathered a child in 1989. After a long string of legal letters, Rossdale agrees to take a paternity test. In late 2004, the test reveals that he is in fact the father of the then 15-year-old runway model Daisy Lowe.

May 2006: Two years after learning that Rossdale has a lovechild, the couple welcome their first child together, a boy – Kingston James McGregor Rossdale. “Gwen’s doing great,” Rossdale tells PEOPLE. “She looks amazing and she’s doing real good.”

August 2008: With their first son just emerging into toddler-hood, the family get a new addition, another son – Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale.

September 2012: Stefani and Rossdale celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary. In an interview with Marie Claire, Stefani calls her marriage her “biggest accomplishment.”

January 2014: Rossdale and Stefani reveal the sex of baby number three – another boy. “I was ready to hand over the crown. But I guess I am still queen of the house,” Stefani shares.

February 2014: Stefani gives birth to another son. “Welcome Apollo Bowie Flynn Rossdale 2/28/14,” Rossdale announces.

July 2014: Rossdale joins his wife as a mentor on NBC’s The Voice. “It was amazing fun. I really enjoyed it,” Rossdale says about the experience.

February 2015: Stefani opens up about her marriage to Cosmopolitan. Although she’s happy for the time they had apart when they were on tour, noting that it gave them time to “do our own thing” and “have their own individuality,” she’s honest about how tough marriage can be.

July 2015: As recently as last month, there seems to be no trouble in paradise. The couple are seen out as a family enjoying their Fourth of July with Stefani’s parents.

August 2015: Just a month after spending the holiday together, the couple announce their split. “While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raisin our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” the pair, who were together for 20 years and married for nearly 13 years, say in a joint statement to PEOPLE.
