A narrow, sandy, seaweed-strewn beach stretched for about 1,000 feet (305 m) along Casco Bay. Parking was in a dirt lot at the end of Beach Road. There we found memorial benches, bike racks, and trash barrels. The state-owned beach itself had no facilities except for an outhouse down a path into the woods. It had no drinking water, no showers, and no lifeguards. Views included distant Halfway Rock Lighthouse and Junk of Pork Island. We most liked the big mussel shells we found at low tide; we least liked the long trek to the outhouse in the woods.

We love this little family-friendly library! On rainy days, it was excellent for reading current periodicals. At its small computer space, on any day it was open, we could print airline passes and surf the web. Library workers were always gracious and helpful. Although we were told the library had only about 10,000 books, they were well selected, with many popular titles of all kinds. We found several comfortable chairs for reading. Printed flyers told us the library’s hours, which differed by days of the week. A small gallery displayed art by local artists. Pandemic protocols were in place. Paved parking was near the entrance. We were grateful for all that the library offered residents and visitors.

What a wild beach! This community beach was about an eighth-mile (0.2 km) long. It was just a short 20-minute walk each way from and back to the ferry dock. Most of Fowler was sand strewn with seaweed. Parking for golf carts and cars was along the far side of a gravel road. We found a trash barrel but no visitor amenities – no potable water and no portable or permanent toilets. The beach offered good views of Peaks Island and passing CBL ferries. It was an excellent place for bird watching. It was also a good place to catch a sunset. Signs warned about poison ivy on a path to the beach. We most liked the views and the fine sand here; we least liked the absence of amenities.

Just a short walk from the Casco Bay Lines dock at Mariners Landing is a small local museum. It takes up part of a new Community Center. Entry is no cost. Parking is in a nearby paved lot. The museum preserves and exhibits documents and artifacts related to local history. Its scope is the five islands that make up the town – Long, Cow, Overset, Vaill, and part of Little Chebeague – as well as other nearby islands. Its well-crafted displays span home life, seafaring, fishing, lobstering, and ocean navigation. On our visit, enthusiastic volunteer docents answered our every question and explained several displays. We most appreciated the exhibits’ use of captioned maps and old photos. We disliked nothing.
