The Inn at Death Valley offers a unique stay, blending historic charm with beautiful grounds that guests have appreciated. However, opinions on accommodations are mixed; while some find the rooms comfortable and clean, others report neglect and maintenance issues such as faulty thermostats and low water pressure. The hotel's amenities, including golf carts and pools, are popular, though inconsistent housekeeping and service have been points of contention. Moreover, many visitors question the value, citing overpriced dining and mediocre accommodations. The location is praised for its convenience for exploration but is also seen as remote, impacting the overall value and amenities available.

There are essentially 2 related properties if you wish to stay in Death Valley National Park and don't wish to camp: The Ranch (family friendly, with several restaurants, and a general store), and the Inn, which is a peaceful retreat with lovely views, tranquil gardens, a fabulous pool, several star gazing decks, and an elegant restaurant. We stayed in the main building, where the rooms are perfect for couples. The inn also has casitas if you need more space. The Inn has done a good job of preserving the heritage that makes it special. From the parking lot, you enter through a paved and lighted tunnel reminiscent of the area's mining past. You emerge into a carpeted hallway and take the elevator to the 3rd floor, which has a gracious lobby, library, bar, and restaurant. Our room had windows on two sides, a window in the beautifully tiled bathroom, and shutters on the door, all of which helped us take in the spectacular views of mountains.
A few suggestions:
1. If you're visiting in winter, bring a blanket for your lap so you can star gaze in comfort. It gets quite cold.
2. Bring hand sanitizer. When you drive out to see sights in the park, the bathrooms are outhouses with no running water.
3. This may be obvious, but the air is very dry. Bring facial mist, moisturizer, and eye drops. Also bring lots of water. You will get thirsty, even in winter.
4. Timbisha Tacos is near the Inn and has great fry bread tacos. It's owned by the Timbisha Shoshone people who have lived in the area forever, and it's delicious.

We were driving through from Lone Pine, CA to Vegas. We could have driven straight through but decided to stop over one night to explore the area. It was well-worth it. The Visitor Center and less expensive restaurants (Saloon and 19th Hole Grill on the golf course) were open in the Furnace Creek area. There was a sticker seal across the door jam to indicate no one had entered the room after it was cleaned and sanitized. The room was spacious (#104) with a dressing area and small refrigerator, bathroom, bedroom with a small fireplace, drip coffee set and mugs, and seating for two.

We had to take narrow stone steps from the reception area to our room. Did not see any convenient elevators to our room. I would suggest to inquire at check in or call ahead if this is a concern.

Stayed two nights in a casita. Overall, it was a good experience, although pretty new and nice they are not particularly luxurious. For example, the bathrooms do not have: a separate toilet stall or double vanity. Also, the shower floor is a pre-fab shoer pan, not tile and there is not a separate tub – not that I would sue, but certainly what is expected for the price of $600+ per night. There were also spider webs in a couple of the corners of the room and a cheap green velvet chair looked out of place. I’ll try to post a couple of pictures. On the plus side, the casitas are comfortable, bedding is good, outdoor patio nice, golf cart is helpful, and the extra space is good. The pool area is quite nice although crowded when I don’t think the hotel was that full (midweek late October). Although pretty new there were several items that needed attention – replace USB plug not working at the desk, clean the filthy bathroom vent fan cover, no cover on outdoor outlet and get rid of the spider webs in room corners. Not at all worth the price, even for a National Park Property!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at The Inn and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the casita, which is located outside the main building. Having a golf cart (included in the reservation for a casita) was very helpful as it can be quite a walk to the restaurant or parking area. The room was spacious and comfortable with separate climate controlled units in the bedroom and living room. The casita included a bar area with a microwave, mini fridge and coffee machine (helpful if you plan to bring your own food, which we did). Complimentary bottled water was also provided and replenished upon request.

We ate breakfast and dinner numerous times at the restaurant. Menu options are limited (menus are on their website, dinner menu changes often), but quality was surprisingly excellent, considering the remote location and lack of decent dining options in the park. The lettuce in the salad was very crisp and orange juice is provided by a "local" supplier and not Tropicana juice I was expecting. Even the shrimp cocktail was surprisingly very plump and tender with a very good (but a tad spicy) sauce.

During our stay (Dec-2021), we were aware there was a staffing shortage in addition to COVID. Due to both, housekeeping did not occur during our stay. However, they provided clean towels, emptied the waste bins and replenished water and coffee upon request. Staff at the front desk did look overwhelmed at times (one person managing guests as well as the phone). I often saw the valet attendant try to help out the front desk in addition to assisting guests outside. I never felt I had to wait too long for assistance. All the staff (front desk, restaurant, housekeeping, etc) were very friendly and helpful.

As it pertains to COVID procedures, the restaurant spaces tables adequately far apart. There's also options to dine outside with a heat lamp (weather is cold at night in Dec!). I appreciated that everyone was wearing masks in the lobby. I felt the hotel was very mindful and thoughtful to ensure guest's safety.

Location of the hotel was quite central to all the best sightseeing locations. Their sister property (The Ranch) and shops/restaurants/gas station are just a short drive away (not more than a few minutes from the parking lot), allowing for more dining options. Aside from here, Stovepipe Wells is the next closest town for food/lodging.

For first timers, I highly recommend spending at least 3 nights in Death Valley. Though the hotel is in a central location, the sightseeing points of interest are spread out (I found Google Maps to very accurate in distance and time). Additionally, it is highly worth to visit some locations and sunrise (Zabriskie's Point) or sunset (Artist Palette, Ubehebe Crater). Information at National Park Service (NPS) website was very helpful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay both at the Inn and exploring Death Valley. I highly recommend visiting both!!

We booked a casita for 4 nights in February. There was a power outage for most of our stay so no electricity or restaurant food and hot water was limited. We were all provided a battery-charged lantern. The hotel reduced the rate significantly. The hotel is very expensive but we were willing to pay that price for a special Death Valley experience. We felt the "no electricity" rate of $250 per night was acceptable for the location in the park and the beauty of the resort. Beds were extremely comfortable and casita was lovely and comfortable. The housekeeping service was not at the level I would expect (kept forgetting to replace glassware) but they may have been off-kilter from the power outage. We viewed the whole experience as an adventure and thoroughly enjoyed the property and staff at the inn. The manager Omar dealt with us directly about the rate change and we were happy with our interactions with him - he was understanding, respectful and professional.

Service is pretty much non-existent. Reception gave us the keys & that was it. We had to figure out parking and carry our bags up the driveway, down two narrow stairs cases without any assistance. I am young and fully capable of carrying my own things, when you spend $500 a night the least we could get is help with our bags.

Want to book tee times are their resort? Concierge won't help you with that!

Want to book a massage? Concierge won't help you with that either!

You are completely on your own once you are there. I called in advance and was told I was going to be fine booking massages. When we get there, concierge tells us we have to submit a request online and wait for an email telling us of their have availability. We did just that, waited half a day for a response only to find out there were no massages available during out stay. Fine, not the end of the world. Fast forward to the next day- my BF and I are sitting by the pool, I am reading my book and he is napping next to me. Another couple is laying next to us and the massage lady is ushering them towards the spa. She then comes to us and says "the couple I am about to massage works for the Washington Post, so if you guys could stay quiet during their massage that would be great." Really?! I was speechless. Their employee is telling guest that she has must more important guests with her and hat we must be quiet. I am not paying this much $ to be told by one of the staff to be quiet as I am reading by the pool.

Be ready to spend $40 to eat dry chicken out of a box. They should offer cheaper food items if they are only offering to-go boxes.

Wish there was a better option because death valley is truly beautiful!

We stayed for 3 nights in January. Check in is on the third floor; a tunnel is provided to get to the stairs or elevator. I can see where someone physically challenged may have some issues.

Room was small, but decent for the two of us. It was clean and bed was comfortable. It was very quiet except for one morning a maintenance worker was briefly talking loudly right outside our door. Patio was a nice place for a drink after hiking, but the cold wind eventually drove us indoors at night. We did not use housekeeping the entire visit so I have no comments regarding their service. Other staff we encountered provided professional service. Grounds and hotel are the best maintained of any Xanterra resort (El Tovar, Lake Yellowstone) we have stayed. If you are late, you will park on a gravel lot.

Location is perfect for hiking in the Badwater area (Zabriskie Point, Red Cathedral, etc.) as it is only a short drive to the trail head.

Food and service (dinners only) in the restaurant were both excellent, but pricey. Small menu, but each dish was well prepared.

As with other Xanterra properties, it is pricey as you pay for the location.

The only issue I had was there was a mistake by one of their employees with one of our dinners that none of the staff could explain. I finally talked to Omar, the manager, who straightened it out and did the right thing.

Overall, a very enjoyable stay and we will be back.

This place is OK, however a number of things were disappointing especially having to travel from the inn to the ranch to get somewhere that is operating at full capacity and offering full main dinners.

Pros - the pool area is really nice, good amounts of sunny and shaded spots with plenty of towels to help yourself to.

The wifi was down when we arrived, after an hour or so the reception staff helped us join another network which was helpful.

We had a problem with the door to our room, it seemed the batteries had died, this was sorted out by the maintenance team fairly quickly and efficiently.

Cons - The ‘dinner’ menu at the inn is just nibbles / bar snacks such as a cheese board, mini burgers, seafood cocktail, chips, fried pickles etc. (still charged as a full meal through!) even when eating in the main Resturant, this is all they can offer. It seems their main kitchen is closed, and snacks are all that is on offer. After 1 night in the Resturant at the inn (the food was good, but not dinner sized) we went to the ranch down the road for dinner - this was good, proper sized dinner meals and it seemed most people travelled from the inn to the ranch for dinner. Which then means one person can’t have a drink as you have to drive back, no shuttle is provided between the 2, which is disappointing.

The pool cafe at the inn doesn’t open until 3pm so if you’re planning on spending the day around the pool, take some drinks with you as you’ll need them in the heat!

Breakfast closes at 10am, which wasn’t made clear to us at check in, nor were the times displayed anywhere. We arrived for breakfast around 10:10am and were turned away, they couldn’t even do us some simple toast and didn’t seem to care that we were hungry. They directed us to the ranch down the road and told us their breakfast buffet is open until 11am. When we got there we found out their breakfast also closed at 10am and lunch doesn’t start until 11. This was really disappointing while in the middle of nowhere. Again we found ourselves wondering why we were staying at the inn when we seemed to spend a lot of time and kept getting directed 2 miles down the road to the ranch.

We stayed 2 nights, the room wasn’t cleaned once while we were there, no one came round to the room to replace towels or make the bed which is what you would usually expect at a high rated hotel. The room was mostly clean, however could do with a good duster.

When checking out around 10am there was no one on the front desk, we had to just leave our keys and leave. We would’ve wanted to have checked that the final bill was correct before they just take it from our card. This also doesn’t leave you feeling very valued as a customer to have to struggle with your luggage with no help from the room to the car park as it is quite far.

Overall ok, but would recommend staying at the ranch as you’ll end up spending most time there anyway!

This is a gorgeous gem of an oasis in the middle of the harsh desert. The hotel is along the lines of the grand old dames of the national park system, but more private, as it's not easy to just wander in. The swimming pool is magnificent nd spring fed.
The dining room is run by Xanterra resors and sucked with Sysco products. What this means is you are eating college cafeteria food and being charged five star pries. Dinner the first night was so bad it was almost funny. Breakfast was acceptable, but similar to eating at a Denny's. You get the idea. How do you avoid eating here when this is such a remote location? The general store has sandwiches of undetermined age vacuum sealed in plastic. In general I would do your best to bring your own food somehow.

Stayed at the Casitas on the Inn for 3 days/2 nights. Lovely property and golf carts with the casitas made for some fun with young kids. Like most Xanterra resorts the food is very overpriced, but the menu features some local stuff. Due to the pandemic, we only did room delivery or pick up, but the outdoors patio looked lovely; we also avoided the spring fed warm pool and it looks just as lovely as the photos! There are also tennis courts on site. Staff all wore masks at all times, and interactions with staff were minimal. I wish they would do check in/check out outdoors kiosk instead of having to go inside. The resort has done a lot to make guests feel comfortable during covid such as delivery to room, and pick up at the other dining options. Beautiful property to explore Death Valley. Really recommend staying here as it is close to the other Furnace creek amenities and everything else is just too far out of the park with minimal amenities. Lots of interesting sites, hikes and nature close enough to the inn. We explored badwater, artist point drive, Zabriskie overlooks, Ubehebe Crater (about 1.25 hour drive from inn), and the sand dunes, and 20 mule borax historical site. Loved the stay. If you live within driving distance of the park and have some flexibility on going such as mid week visit, I recommend calling the reservation line to ask about the casitas as I was never successful searching online. I did get a booking 5 days prior by calling the reservation line (3rd time using Xanterra for park visits and each one has been a positive experience) and booked it straight away during a mid winter break. I never regret staying in the park resorts. They are really lovely.

The ranch has its own pool that is fed by the same hotspring, hence no chlorine, but I do not believe you are welcome to use the Inn's pool which is for their guests who pay a significant fee.

They do have a microwave and mini fridge. There are two cups, two mugs, coffee maker, and coffee supplies. There are no dishes or silverware, and if you have more than two people, you may need more cups. When we ordered delivery or takeout from the restaurant, though, they did give paper plates and plastic silverware.
