Day Hits Two Homers to Lead Monarchs to Victory Over DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 26, 2024) - - Zach Day hit two home runs, including a two-run walk-off homer, to lead King's College baseball in the Monarchs' Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom 6-4 win over DeSales University this afternoon at home on Lipo Field. Day also contributed a double, while Kevin Kullman picked up two of his own. Caleb Graham had his best game of the season on the mound for King's with 9.0 IP and three strikeouts while allowing only eight hits. The Monarchs are now 11-21 overall and 5-14 in MAC Freedom play, while the Bulldogs drop to 15-21 and 8-11 in the conference.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bulldogs put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning on a RBI-single hit to center field. DeSales added a run to its lead in the top of the third on another RBI-single, this time to left center. Kullman hit his first double of the day in the fourth inning, but the Monarchs were unable to capitalize on the opportunity to send him home and score. The Bulldogs maintained their 2-0 lead until the sixth inning when they earned a third run after sending a hit to right field.

Despite the Monarchs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in a 3-0 deficit, King's pushed through to score three runs to tie the game. After Day doubled to right-center, Chase Yochem singled through the left side to send Day in for the RBI. Kullman followed up with his second double to advance him and Yochem to second and third respectively just in time for Nick Ciszak to hit a two-run single.

Going into the top of the seventh inning with a 3-3 tie, DeSales broke it after scoring its fourth run on a sacrifice-fly to center field. The Bulldogs continued to lead 4-3 through the top of the eighth until Day stepped to the plate and ripped his first home run of the day out of the park to tie things back up at 4-4.

The Monarchs played strong defense in the top of the nineth to force the Bulldogs three-up-three-down. Brennen Schneider then stepped to the plate for King's in the bottom of the inning to hit a two-out single and get on base just before Day sent his second homer out of the park again to secure the 6-4 win for the Monarchs over DeSales.

Day went three-for-five at the plate while earning three runs and three RBIs for King's. Ciszak added two hits and two RBIs, while Kullman also had two hits and one run. Yochem recorded a hit and an RBI, and Schneider contributed a hit and a run as well. Today's MAC Freedom win was also Graham's first on the mound as he advances to 1-2 overall this season.

The Monarchs take on the Bulldogs again tomorrow at DeSales's own Weiland Park for a MAC Freedom doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
