The collaboration between Tom Hardy and the brand that brought us Lime, Basil & Mandarin is a little more than just a contract between two parties, Tom was involved in the creative campaign surrounding the announcement. Tom's ad-man father Chips Hardy and acclaimed director Edward Berger came together to shoot a 60-second ad for the Cypress & Grapevine Cologne Intense, using the scents, scenery and atmosphere of London at night to explain the fragrance.

In a statement, Tom Hardy explains their thought process 'During the conception stage, we were intrigued by the challenge of visualising a fragrance. It was exciting trying to understand how flows, how it takes to the air, how it takes to the senses, how it can impact us. How do you make a scent visible on screen? It was all part of the game for us. You almost want to smell the advert. When thinking about this idea of scent, both my father and I landed on this notion of ‘there’s something in the air’. This line was actually the starting point of the creative.'

As for the scent Tom Hardy is the face of, it is a unisex scent but there is a masculine feel to this. For starters, it's woody with mossy and spicy facets, and it sounds as though it would linger long on the skin.

The dark glass bottles of Jo Malone London's Cologne Intense indicate the scents the brand creates with perfume notes from around the globe. The clear glass Cologne bottles primarily are lighter in concentration and are based on British flowers, plants and extracts. So, what does Tom Hardy think about the scent he's the face of?

Tom Hardy sounds like he's very attached to the scent. He says I realise I am the ambassador for Cypress & Grapevine Cologne Intense, but what are the chances of it actually being utterly divine? It’s extremely rare. But it actually is! I’m funny about fragrance, can’t just buy it off the shelf, I’m not really that way inclined. I think that a good fragrance has to exist without being overbearing and have an assimilation to the human being that is wearing it. To me, it has this wonderful classic, vintage and earthy scent.'

'A lot of people who have smelt it on me have asked what it is. Even my 16-year-old also grabbed my bottle, so even the kids like it! Also, ever since I’ve been working with Jo Malone London, I’ve realised how many people have asked if I can give them things. It used to be about T-shirts and selfies, now it’s about candles and fragrances,' he laughs.
