2002

Money. Murder. Betrayal. It's all in the bag.

When a bag filled with money goes missing from a casino, the Hitman (Chris O'Donnell) must retrieve it. While he tracks the stash down, the bag changes hands numerous times, finding its way to the Drifter (Jeremy Davies) and the Waitress (Rachael Leigh Cook), among others. As the bag's journey continues, more characters, including the Cop (Michael Rapaport) and the Sheriff (Keith David), get drawn into the winding crime tale, and the search becomes increasingly desperate.

Holy Shit Is This Bad! This is one of those movies where you sit and stare in complete bewilderment at how this could waste such a first rate cast. Seriously check out the cast list for this one. Every single one of these actors is someone I like and someone who radiates personality, and yet this movie somehow squanders each and every one of them! I don't even know how it's even possible to waste Jon Polito or Keith David or Bill Pullman and yet this movie wastes all three of them!!!! The lone highlight of this might actually be the musical cue of Morphine's I Had My Chance in one quick scene where Jeremy Davies sits in the middle…

It's fascinating to see this cast on such a weird, bleached-out product-of-its-time Tarantino ripoff. I think it's worth a look for its dizzying camerawork and strange mood and aesthetic...low rent artsy that oddly, inexplicably works at times. I suppose those were just lucky moments as this didn't turn out to be the rough early work of a director finding his voice, instead being the out-there hack work of...just a small time hack.
It's a curio which I don't exactly recommend, but neither would I advise against it. There's a style that's borderline too much, hampered by too many flashbacks to the same moment and too much Tarantino flavoring...and yet the cast sells it, creating occassional flickers of magic.

The absolute fucking slop I endure for Rachael Leigh Cook, holy shit. The worst Tarantino ripoff you’ve ever seen. I wanna speak to whoever edited this. Or just bare knuckle box them. Cause it started as bizarre and by the end I was actually fuming and had a headache.
What an awful 900th movie to record on here.

So, someone I know recommended this movie to me, because I'd never heard of it before.
And after watching it, I now know why I had never seen nor heard of it... it's fucking hot garbage.
After forcing myself to finish it, I sent a text to my now former acquaintance and asked her why she hated me so much as to recommend this trash. She laughed... I laughed... then I deleted her number.
The best thing I can say about it... it has a decent cast.
Except for Michael Rapaport. Hate that guy.

After I watched this movie, when I found out there were definitely production problems involved in the making of this, I was not surprised. A cast full of familiar faces for sure (and if you ever wanted to see Bill Pullman look and even act like Crispin Glover...) but this just wasn't a good film. It's full of unpleasantness and I was turned off by it. A shame.

Woody Allen: 29 Palms features decent visuals, acting, and an interesting albeit overplayed storyline, and should be better than it is - but the climax, writing, and editing makes it feel like a Val Waxman film.
