WARNING: Contains potential SPOILERS for The Matrix ResurrectionsThe Matrix Resurrections cast features some familiar returning faces along with new ones, including some extremely controversial roles being recast. The Matrix Resurrections is the long-awaited fourth installment in the Matrix franchise and given the sprawling nature of the Matrix saga, the long list of characters is expectedly complex. The movie follows Neo as he assesses the reality of his new state of living and faces off against new and old foes in the process. On his new journey, Neo reunites with old allies as well as a fresh slate of new faces, who aid Neo on his latest mission of self-discovery.

Lana Wachowski's ambitious sequel takes a very meta approach to its story, deconstructing the original Matrix trilogy while also telling its own personal tale with Neo and Trinity. The latest entry follows what happened in the Matrix trilogy and tackles the usual themes of the series, such as love and the difference between peace and victory, while also exploring the real-world IP/nostalgia craze in Hollywood. Beyond the central narrative is a committed cast of actors reprising the roles of some of cinema's most beloved characters, as well as new faces that will likely continue the Matrix franchise.

Keanu Reeves as Neo

Neo sitting on a leather chair in Matrix Resurrections

Keanu Reeves returns as Neo but is now going by his original name, Thomas Anderson, in a world that resembles the original Matrix he was trapped in. With no memories of his past life, Neo lives a mundane existence where he is the most famous video game designer in the world and is tasked with making a fourth entry of his famous game series, "The Matrix." The Matrix is just one of Reeves's many landmark action movies, and he's now best known for the John Wick franchise, which has become a billion-dollar series. The phenomenal success of the assassin series is a big part of what got The Matrix Resurrections greenlit.

Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity

Trinity stands on the rooftop with Neo in Matrix Resurrections

Carrie-Anne Moss returns in her iconic role of Trinity, who is suffering a similar fate as Neo, trapped in this same mundane reality where she is now a loving wife and mother, going by the name Tiffany. But unlike Neo, Trinity is a bit more content with this new reality and is only occasionally burdened by memories of a past life she has forgotten. Outside of the Matrix trilogy, Moss can be seen in Christopher Nolan's breakthrough movie Memento, as well as Marvel/Netflix's Jessica Jones, where she plays Jeri Hogarth, a lawyer who often gives Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones work.

Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe

Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe who looks decades older in The Matrix Resurrections

Another returning face is Jada Pinkett Smith's Niobe, who is a much older and wiser figure since she was last seen in The Matrix Revolutions. Niobe has taken over Morpheus' role of leadership amongst the rebellion in a new version of Zion, and is a guide for Neo throughout The Matrix Resurrections, as she is a major link to his past life. Jada Pinkett Smith is also famous for voicing the character of Gloria in the animated Madagascar trilogy, as well as her roles in Girls Trip and Collateral.

Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian

The Merovingian with a dirty face and scruffy, long hair in The Matrix Resurrections

Returning to play his original character is Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian. Appearing last in The Matrix Revolutions, The Merovingian acted as a "trafficker of information," much like an organized crime boss, within the Matrix and played a key role in both Reloaded and Revolutions. In The Matrix Resurrections, The Merovingian doesn't play a particularly big role, mainly acting as a beacon for the film's more humorous, meta aspects, but he makes an impression when he is present in the film. Wilson is also known for appearing in films such as Catwoman and Timeline. However, Wilson has mostly stuck to his roots by starring in French indie movies.

Jessica Henwick as Bugs

Jessica Henwick as Bugs with blue hair in The Matrix Resurrections

Jessica Henwick plays a new character named Bugs, a hacker and prominent figure in new Zion's rebellion, who is, alongside Morpheus, a catalyst for Neo's journey. Bugs is a so-called "true believer" of the legend of Neo, and she's the most developed of The Matrix Resurrections cast, as she aids in Neo's discovering the truth of his world. Henwick has had many notable roles, starring in the biggest Hollywood movies of the 2020s, including The Gray Man and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She also plays Peggy in the Netflix smash hit murder mystery, Glass Onion. If anybody can carry the Matrix torch in another sequel, it's Henwick.

Neil Patrick Harris as The Analyst

The Analyst with transparent blue glasses in The Matrix Resurrections

Neil Patrick Harris plays The Analyst, a mysterious figure in Neo's Matrix reality. The Analyst acts as a therapist to Neo and seemingly wants to help Neo with his strange visions of his past life. The Analyst is a nice enough character on the surface, but he's hiding some dark secrets that Neo will discover on his journey. Harris is most famous for his role as Barney Stinson in the acclaimed sitcom How I Met Your Mother, for which he was nominated for four Primetime Emmys. He is also known for films such as David Fincher's Gone Girl, as well as Paul Verhoeven's cult classic Starship Troopers.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus

Morpheus holds up a red pill in The Matrix Resurrections

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II replaces Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, but instead of playing the Morpheus audiences know from the original trilogy, this is a slightly different version of the iconic character. It was an intentional choice and this new version of Morpheus works within the rules of the Matrix itself to play a pivotal role in Neo's journey. Abdul-Mateen II has an impressive resume, including HBO's Watchmen series, for which he won a Primetime Emmy, as well as roles in 2021's Candyman reboot and 2020's The Trial of the Chicago 7. The Matrix Resurrections cast member even gives Laurence Fishburne a run for his money.

Jonathan Groff as Agent Smith

Agent Smith sits in a chair in a modern office in The Matrix Resurrections

Replacing Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith is Jonathan Groff. Groff's version of Smith takes the form of Neo's business partner at the game development company he works for in this new Matrix. This version of Smith is an enigma, and he has his own intentions that are both similar and distinct from those of the original character. Smith functions as a loose canon in The Matrix Resurrections, but he's still a threat to Neo and Trinity. Groff is best known as the voice of Kristoff in Disney's Frozen franchise, as well as his role as King George in the stage musical, Hamilton, but his movie acting credits are still light.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Sati

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in The Matrix Resurrections

Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays a grown-up version of Sati, last seen as a child in The Matrix Revolutions. She is also an ally of Neo in the film and aids Neo and the Resistance throughout the narrative. While not given as much to do this time around, Sati remains an important role in The Matrix Resurrections cast. As the original Sati was just a little girl, the role is now played by Jonas, who is an excellent replacement for Tanveer K. Atwal, who originally played the character. Jonas is a hugely popular Indian actor in the world of Bollywood, and The Matrix Resurrections marks her breakthrough into Hollywood.

The Matrix Resurrections' Supporting Cast and Characters

Trinity's husband Chad played by Chad Stahelski in The Matrix Resurrections

Erendira Ibarra as Lexy - Lexy acts as an ally to Henwick's Bugs in the film. She is another member of the Resistance crew. Ibarra has also appeared in another Wachowski production, the show Sense8, where she played the character of Daniela.

Andrew Caldwell as Jude - Jude is a work partner of Neo at the game development company they work for. Jude is also obsessed with Neo's work on the Matrix game trilogy and is always very hyperactive when Neo's Thomas Anderson is around. Caldwell has also starred in films such as 2019's Haunt and 2018's Unbroken: Path to Redemption.

Christina Ricci - Gwyn de Vere - Gwyn de Vere is a business executive at the video game company, Deus Ex Machina, and leads the hilariously meta brainstorming session about the fourth Matrix video game. Ricci is best known for her roles as a child actor, such as Wednesday in the 1990s Addams Family movies, and she worked with Lana Wachowski on the now cult classic Speed Racer.

Brian J. Smith as Berg - Berg is an ally of Ibarra's Lexy and is brought in to help the crew on their mission. Berg makes for a valuable ally of the team in the real world and an interesting member of The Matrix Resurrections cast. Smith has also appeared on the Wachowski show, Sense8, along with shows like Stargate Universe.

Chad Stahelski as Chad - Chad is the very passive-aggressive husband of Trinity, or as Chad knows her, Tiffany. Stahelski's casting fits in with the meta elements of the movie, as the actor is the director of the John Wick franchise, and before that, he was a stunt coordinator and Reeves's stunt double. Stahelski worked on the first three Matrix movies.

Toby Onwumere as Sequoia - Sequoia is yet another member of Bugs' Resistance team in The Matrix Resurrections. Called "Seek" for short, he acts as the crew's operator. Onwumere is also Sense8 alumni, and he stars in another series called Reasonable Doubt.
