Over the weekend, many celebrated the unofficial “Star Wars” holiday, May the 4th. While Lucasfilm didn’t announce anything monumental, the studio did release a trailer for the next “Star Wars” live-action TV series coming, “The Acolyte.” But that’s not the only “Star Wars” show coming in 2024, apparently. We also got word about when the next-next series, “The Skeleton Crew,” will be arriving on Disney+.

During an interview at this year’s CCXP (via Collider), director Jon Watts revealed the release time-frame for his “Star Wars” series, “The Skeleton Crew.” According to the filmmaker, who is directing part of the series, as well as producing, “The Skeleton Crew” will be arriving on Disney+ around Christmas time. That puts it about six months away from “The Acolyte,” which arrives in June.
While we don’t know much about the plot of the series, “The Skeleton Crew” is said to follow the adventures of some kids in the “Star Wars” universe. The oft-used term “Amblin” has been used to describe the vibe of the series, which means it’ll appeal to younger people while also having a lot of heart and humor. Regardless, it does point to a story that will be separate from The Skywalker Saga. The series stars Jude Law, Kerry Condon, Tunde Abedimpe, Michael C. Bradford, Cass Buggé, M.J. Kang, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith.

For those fans who have been a bit tired of the interconnectedness of the Dave Filoni-led live-action series, “The Skeleton Crew” and “The Acolyte” are seemingly going to offer a reprieve from the mega-story the creator has been putting together with series such as “Ahsoka,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “The Mandalorian.” “The Mandalorian,” in particular, has been big business for Disney+ and Lucasfilm. The other two series have appealed to the die-hard fanbase, but haven’t really been as beloved by critics. Viewership has seemingly been lower, as well.
So, will “The Skeleton Crew” appeal to the mass audiences looking for good old fashioned “Star Wars” storytelling? We’ll have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, there will be plenty of people looking for a new show to watch around Christmas.
