How to factory reset a windows 10 laptop without losing windows 10 itself
I am selling my old laptop with windows 10 on it but im worried that if I factory reset it, it will downgrade back to windows 8.1 when on the ad i posted it said windows 10. So im wondering how to remove all my files and photos while still keeping windows
10
Well if you use the manufacturers Factory Restore, it will definitely revert to Windows 8.1
Copy all your data from the laptop
Use the Windows 10 Reset from the Windows 10 Recovery Environment, should retain Windows 10:
Press the Shift Key whilst clicking Restart to get into the WinRE
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC
Choose to keep nothing
This should give you an empty laptop with Windows 10
If your system does revert to Windows 8.1, clean install Windows 10
download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), you can create a bootable USB flash drive (min 4GB) using that tool or create the ISO file
which you can later burn to DVD
Then, Boot your PC from the Installation Media you just created and install a fresh copy of Windows 10 (change Boot Order in your BIOS)
Since you previously had Windows 10 installed and activated
on that PC during the installation process skip the steps which ask for a product key and select the option
'I am Reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC', and activation will not be an issue, your PC will have a digital entitlement stored on the Microsoft Servers
