Update: Ohio man charged in fatal Schuylkill crash

A 46-year-old Youngstown, Ohio, man is being charged in a Schuylkill County head-on collision that left a woman dead and two children injured.

State police at Frackville said Rodney Rivers was traveling north on Route 901 near the intersection with Old Phoenix Road.

Police said the Rivers was going at a high rate of speed, going at a high rate of speed, attempting to overtake vehicles on the left.

Elizabeth Ryan, 65, of Pottsville, was traveling south and was killed when she was hit head-on by the car Rivers was driving at 7:31 p.m.

Police said Rivers went off the road and had damage to the driver side front bumper, hood and headlight assembly. He was able to get out of the car and had no injuries.

Ryan’s vehicle had disabling damages and was leaking fluids. Police had to extricate her from the car. Two children, ages 5 and 8, who were passengers in the car, were taken to the hospital.

Rivers was charged with homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle. He was arraigned Sunday and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Police said additional charged are pending.
