My expectations for this album were too high so perhaps it's not surprising I feel disappointed. If I am in the mood for piano music with quartet, than I get a similar experience from Enya and if innovation, intrigue is what I am after, then Channel Light Vessel fits the bill. The former I can play in elderly relative's presence; the latter I feel I cannot.
Lyrics included for the five silky smooth songs. The rest; great to study by.

This seemingly one off collaboration between Roger Eno and Kate St. John set the foundations for the future birth of the Channel Light Vessel project, which would draw many of its ideas and inspirations from The Familiar.
Where as the Channel Light Vessel project revolved around layers of texture and sound, The Familiar is far less 'cluttered', and the piercing yet beautiful orchestral symphonies are allowed to glide over the mournful vocals of Kate St. John. Part of the reason behind the more minimalist sound is due to the fact that there are no sound effects or voice overs as such, which isn’t a bad thing considering the vocals help to bring the music to life, without any distractions. There are some very sombre and beautiful pieces within the album, which is certainly an essential piece of the puzzle, and overall the record has a great uplifting mood throughout.
