In 1974, Big Star were imploding. After the disappointing sales of their debut album, and the departure of founding member Chris Bell in late ’72, the band had recorded their sophomore effort, Radio City, as a three piece. By the time of the album’s release in February ‘74, however, Big Star was down to just two members - Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens. Recording under the moniker ‘Sister Lovers’, the pair persevered and went into the studio in late ’74 for sessions for a new album, Third. South West captures a fascinating and poignant moment in the Big Star story, from the band’s hometown. It was broadcast live by WLYX, the radio station owned by Southwestern University, in January 1975, shortly after sessions for Third had wrapped up. In their guise as ‘Sister Lovers’, Chilton and Stephens, assisted by guest players, present several songs from Third together alongside several Chilton compositions that would not surface on record until his solo albums in the ‘80s. Rumours surround the show – that Chilton was under the heavy influence of psychedelics, that Stephens quit for good the next morning; either way, it remains an absolutely essential document of one of music’s most influential, innovative acts, at the moment of both their greatest artistic achievement and their untimely dissolution.
Horrible sound, worse performance - for die-hard "must have everything" fans only. Painful enough that listeners starting with this as their first Big Star experience would never want to seek out their classic studio albums. Only the inclusion of "Take Me Home And Make Me Like It" and "I Will Always Love You" make it borderline interesting, unless you get off by witnessing a great band implode before your (ears) eyes. A more appropriate title for this album would be "Apathy, Depression and Drugs".
There are worthy live Big Star albums - grab "Nobody Can Dance" and "Big Star Live" instead (for 70's era Big Star) or "Columbia" and "Live In Memphis" for the reformed (Posies) lineup. Of course the first three studio albums are a staple of any worthwhile record collection (In Space, the 2005 studio album, doesn't measure up), and the recent box set and documentary film are excellent testaments to their brilliance.
If you are an avid Big Star fan you will appreciate this.....the final sounds of a great band disintegrating. If you are you looking for a quality recording and inspired performances check out the 3 studio Big Star albums.
