About
A number of new attractions were available for the visitors at the Fram Museum, the highlight being the continuous 270 degrees surround film shown from the deck of Fram. The Fram Museum is located at Bygdøy, a short distance from the centre of Oslo and is easily reached by bus or, in the summer season, by ferry from the City Hall quayside. We focus on polar history, our centrepiece beeing FRAM, the strongest wooden polar ship ever, dating from 1893. Our closest neighbours are the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum. The Viking Ship Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum are within 15 minutes walk. The Bygdøy peninsula is therefore popularly known as the museum peninsula. Bygdøy is one of Oslo´s main places to go. The main exhibition in the Fram building has explanatory texts in ten languages and describes the three great Fram expeditions. We have exclusive polar souvenirs in our shop and probably the world’s biggest polar book store with 220 different titles.

    Great Historic Museum
I have to thank our tour guide for giving us so much information about this museum. But even without him we would have loved just wandering around. Seeing the actual ship that took Amundsen to the South Pole was unreal.
    Thank you!!!

    A Tribute to Exploration
The Fram Museum is possibly the most impressive collections of Norwegian Exploration, but also highlights exploration from other parts of the world. Definitely worth a visit, combined with some of the other wonderful museums on Oslo's museum island. Spend at least 2 - 3 hours in the museum.
    Thank you for visiting!

A fascinating tribute to Norwegian exploratory spirit
Norway has fostered an impressive number of remarkable explorers. They were men who took incredible risks to satisfy their thirst for knowledge and pioneering adventure. Amundsen and Nansen are among the most famous, and this museum does a great job of telling their stories. In contrast to the improvised recklessness displayed in the sister museum (Kon-Tiki), these were men of meticulous preparation. The core of the Fram museum is the namesake ship itself. It has been restored to display in full scale life on board, reinforced by clever simulations of surrounding storms and ice bergs. Along the walls in this multi-story display are rows of texts in Norwegian and English, supplemented by boxes offering interpretation in half a dozen more languages. Displays of various artefacts from expeditions are mixed in. The only part that does not work well is the fact that your reading and watching is constantly interrupted by people passing in front of you. The layout of the museum is simply too narrow to be convenient. But overall, the museum is a remarkable testimony of man's testing of human boundaries.
Thank you for leaving a thorough review! Hoping to fix the flow of exhibitions in the next upgrade.

Excellent experience onboard! Detailed historical records.
One of the best museums of specific interest. They have maintained the Fram so well and it is an experience to walk in, around and through this fantastic ship. Historical pictures were displayed all around and there were supporting shows to watch. A lot of Ealing involved.
    Thank you for visiting!

    Interesting place
Well worth the trip. Buy an Oslo card, 24 hours pass, saves a fortune, because this museum is on a peninsula, with 4 others, and the ferry ride is included in the card price. Buy pass at city hall pier 3, from the office, and 10 minute boat trip ( good in itself) to the peninsula. Learned a lot about Amundsen and why he beat Scott ( We have been to discovery at Dundee a few years ago) Another great museum
    Thank you for visiting!

    Tight Times at Fram
Interesting museum about the ice explorers. The exhibits in the main building were on balconies that surrounded the ship. We found them to be too tight and close together to be able to view and read about them. Unless a new building is constructed with wider aisles, this museum will disappoint those who go and try to navigate the tight balconies to view the exhibits.
    Thank you for visiting!

    Museum in beautiful surrounding
Pity I got there just when it was about to close. However I was still able to enjoy the surroundings. There is a lake nearby with benches to relax and statutes of dignitaries nearby as well. The area also had a very tall statue of alien life I am assuming right next door. It is a peaceful area one can enjoy after the museum. The bus comes right to this museum and turns around and head back out. So taking a bus is a good option.
    Thank you!

Great museum - worth a visit
This museum is a bit distant from the central part of Oslo, but still accessible by cab or bus and it is worth seeing. The museum brings to life the exploration of the polar regions by Norwegians in the last century and displays the ship Fram that was used on some of the expeditions. You can walk through the boat which really gives you an idea of what the voyages were like. There are a number of very good displays and a movie (unfortunately the movie was not available the day we visited). It is definitely worth going out of your way to see.

See The Life and Challenges of Polar Explorers
Next was the Fram Museum, a record of the triumphs of Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen and housing the Gjøa, the first ship to navigate the North West passage and the Fram, the ship that took Amundsen to the Antarctica where he became the first person to reach the South Pole. The Fram is open for people to walk through and get a sense of what life onboard might have been like. It is regarded as the strongest wooden ship ever built as it could withstand becoming frozen in ice, where all previous ship were crushed when icebound. A really interesting museum and it was jam packed in the height of summer.

Educational, interesting visit to an authentic museum.
We visited the Fram Museum in the context of a 3 day stay in Oslo. The Fram Museum is a very detailed authentic experience giving great insights into the discovery journey to the North and South Pole. The bravery and courage of the men is extremely well shown and with maps, interactive charts, and a visit to the original Fram ship it is entertaining and very educational. It requires quite concentrated reading and studying of the texts on display and certain exhibits are a little tightly packed, especially if there are more people visiting. Personally, I learnt a lot and found it a very good experience. It's best to foresee at least 1,5 hrs, better 2 hours!

Incredible interesting and extremely well presented. Fascinating and well presented record of all arctic explorations dating from 15th century and the endeavours to find both north west and north east passages. Best thing I’ve seen and of a level with the book presentation of Shackleton endurance.
It’s worth visiting Oslo just for this!

Top Museum if you are interested in Polar research. Warning: Please think carefully about the time period you enter at the parking machine. 60 euros are better invested in a dinner than in a parking fine!

The ship is incredible. Unbelievable to go on it. The museum is packed to the hilt with information-so much so that it’s overwhelming and very crowded with displays in a tight space.
The museum needs extending- which might be planned. Let the ship take the space and move all the written stuff to another section where people can study it. Excellent bookshop. Small dark cafe which is also crowded into the small space. But overall you won’t be disappointed.

A very good museum learning about the polar explorations of generations past in terms of the teams, dangers, challenges and achievements gained and lost as a result. The museum is spread across a couple of small buildings each housing a sailing vessel that was used by the great explorers, one of which is fully open to roam within.

The museum is divided into different sections, one being a short video room which gives an overview and introduction to polar exploration and its intrigue. The next is a summary of the different expeditions that were undertaken from different countries and teams in the name of science and technological development, with an emphasis on the Norwegians of course. The main building houses the Flam vessel a reinforced wooden ship that was built to withstand the crushing ice flows. You can explore the main deck and below deck to see and experience what life was like for the crew aided by lighting, low beams, surround sound, projections and life-like figures and dioramas in rooms.

Its quite impressive and an enjoyable experience wondering round. There is a lot of information to look at, read and digest the majority of which is in Norwegian and English. Besides the explorers themselves and expeditions undertaken there is also coverage of local culture among the Canadian Inuit with clothing, weapons, and crafts wear all visible in display cases as you go round as well as also animals found in the polar regions.

There are audio guides as well which are available in several languages (French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese etc) including a physical guidebook. I spent about 2 hours here wondering around, and could, if reading everything on offer, have spent about 3. They also had a cafe with small explorer huts to dine in - great for privacy and also a well stocked shop with quite a good selection of items for sale.

A brilliant museum - two boats to explore in the entirety and really helpful displays on English and Norwegian- easily spend 2 or 3 hours here. So glad we came.

I was expecting more and more interactive museum
The 2 boats are fun to see but all the rest was a little disappointing, the place is a bit far out, so the bus is very effective way to get there

Great morning out visiting the Fram museum. I’ve been before (back in 2022) and the interactive weather display was fully operational with the ice room. However, on this occasion the weather on the ships deck wasn’t working at one end of the ship and the ice room was closed and no longer in use. Still, an amazing ship to visit and I’d recommend a break away from the city centre to get out there to learn about the Arctic explorers.

The Fram Museum on Oslo's museum island is a must for any visitor to Norway's capital. The museum is dedicated to the remarkable story of the Fram, a Schooner used in expeditions of the Arctic and Antarctic regions by the Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, Oscar Wisting, and Roald Amundsen between 1893 and 1912. However, it is also dedicated to the history of exploration in general, celebrating the successes, but also mentioning the failures. Definitely worth a visit
