· At last all in one place, here are the full recordings of the 60's Manchester brit-popsters The Mindbenders as fronted by Eric Stewart following the departure from the band of Wayne Fontana. Comprising 2 LPs, 6 EPs, 10 singles.
· Includes the big hits A Groovy Kind of Love , Can't Live With You , Ashes to Ashes, The Letter.
· Plus the opportunity to hear their own well crafted heavier b-sides, and their totally in tune with the times tracks using wah-wah, phasing, off-beat drumming, lilting background vocals, and psychedelic sitar like solos.
· Includes tracks reissued for the first time on CD.
· Includes the sessions arranged by John Paul Jones.
· Presents fascinating early collaborations between future 10CC'ers Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman as the latter chipped in with song writing and production assistance during 1967. Stewart even began the foundations of Strawberry Studios as The Mindbenders entered their final phase.

This compilation of albums, singles and EPs, captures a number of alternative versions of standard R&B tracks - Just A Little Bit, Dont Cry No More, Shotgun, Homework and a very high falsetto attempt of Donnie Elberts A Little Piece of Leather. I was very impressed with the tight sound of the band, the guitar breaks and on some tracks a Freakbeat feel to them, just waiting to burst out. However, as much as i enjoyed listening to the CD, I couldnt help notice on some of the tracks on CD1 the actual sound quality was very echo-ey on the vocals, almost an empty studio with no soundproofing!!! Not all tracks like this but enough for me notice.
But dont let this put you off from buying this CD. If you like R&B and Beat then give this album a go, there are some excellent tracks on it - once you get past the Groovy Kind of Love then you start getting into the real Mindbenders - my favourite tracks being, To Be or Not To Be, Shotgun, Cool Jerk, The Seventh Son and Love Is Good, 90% of the CD are mid to fast tempo, im not a lover of slow tunes but accept on compilations like this it covers all of the tracks - so 4 out of 5 stars based on the sound quality.
This version of the group got off to a good head start with the worldwide hit "A Groovy Kind Of Love" in early 1966, but only three further singles troubled British chart compilers with the group scoring their last (albeit minor) hit with a cover of the Box Tops' "The Letter" in the late summer of 1967. With the ending of consistent commercial success, the trio's membership atrophied; "The Letter" saw teenage drummer Paul Hancox replacing Ric Rothwell and, when bassist Bob Lang quit in early 1968, Graham Gouldman (who had already entered the group's story as a producer and by writing "Schoolgirl") joined up. Guitarist/Lead singer Eric Stewart proved the nucleus of the band and the B-sides included on this set manifest his evolution as a songwriter; along with the polished r'n'b based pop material and Graham Gouldman's involvement it points the way forward to 10cc. The lineup changes were not to the detriment of the group's output...
The bulk of the songs are in stereo, apart from the 'standalone' singles like their reading of Robert Knight's "Blessed Are The Lonely" and Graham Gouldman's "Uncle Joe The Ice Cream Man" (their last release in August 1968) which appear in their original mono. Another Gouldman song, the controversial "Schoolgirl", appears in both its stereo LP and re-recorded mono A-side versions from April and November 1967 respectively. There are many highlights apart from the hit singles, with strong songs (from notable writers like Rod Argent and the Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Toni Wine/Carole Bayer Sager teams) supported by equally strong musicianship and arrangements.
This is a good, consistent compilation which is of vital interest to those interested in classic 1960s pop and to 10cc fans wanting to discover Eric Stewart's previous work.
