Even though the film was India's first live action - 3D animation combination feature film, it hit at the box office, but was saved by the high gross it made in a two week nett, but was still disliked by many critics, who pointed out some of the spoilers of the film, such as it being a remake of the 1996 family film, Space Jam, which starred Michael Jordan.

It was reportedly inspired by Basu Chatterjee's Khatta Meetha, wherein Ashok Kumar and Pearl Padamsee played an old couple marrying with children from their previous marriages, and film's rights were later bought over. Golmaal 3 was released on 5 November 2010, and received mixed to negative response worldwide. However, the film was eventually declared a blockbuster at the box office and is currently the ninth highest grossing Bollywood film according to worldwide gross collections.In 2014, a Telugu feature film Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummada is a remake of Golmaal with top actors like Mohan Babu, Manchu Vishnu, Manchu Manoj, Varun Sandesh, Raveena Tandon.

It is based on the love stories of three people. The movie, also stars Nakuul Mehta, who plays a painter, named Shekhar, who woos Sanjana, but only to find she has a long-lost boyfriend, Rohit, who she believes, is no more. The film opened to theatres on 20 June 2008. Although it received generally mixed reviews, the movie was declared as the first big flop of 2008.

The strength of the story lies in maintaining the suspense of the true identity of the hero till the end. It is a mix of action and romance with a message about the duty and responsibility of the police force. Prabhu Deva remade the film again in Hindi as Wanted. The film whose plot revolves around a young IPS officer who goes undercover as a criminal in order to eliminate notorious criminals in a police operation, released on 12 January 2007 to commercial success and completed a 200-day run at the box office and was declared a blockbuster.
