I spent two days in Duluth while on site to see how the Frost River Trading Company operates, and stayed at the Inn on Lake Superior. I found it to be well laid out, conveniently located, and comfortable. There were shops (including a fascinating glass-blowing workshop) right across the street. The US Corps of Engineers Museum is a short walk away, as is the Bentleyville Holiday Lights display.

The room was exceptionally well appointed. The sunken bath with jet sprays was excellent; the bathroom and shower were well-designed, and the room itself was generously appointed.

Although the indoor pool seemed to be of interest to families, I liked the outdoor pool in the frosty cool of the morning in December. While the room may have been more expensive than chain rooms being offered nearby, I thought the value of the room was well above par. It helps that the hotel is not far from the airport, so Uber/Lyft rides to and from were under $20 each.

We enjoyed our stay. Times of covid are weird - next time we'd love to check out a good hot breakfast. We didn't check out the pool. Our room had everything we needed - a fridge, a great hot shower with strong water pressure, and a door to sit outside and enjoy the lake. Smores at the fire pit were a cute and tasty novelty. The location is great and in the heart of the busting Canal Park area. Thanks for a good stay - we hope to return!

this is the second time staying at the Inn on Lake Superior. It's great. The city is working hard to fix the lake walk and enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching everything going on. It will look amazing!
I love the location, easy walking to shops and restaurants.
We were able to go kayaking on the lake near Split Rock Lighthouse...beautiful, peaceful. Hiking in the Superior Hiking Trail.
Duluth has so much to offer (we were her during December snowshoeing)
The hotel staff working hard cleaning common areas, felt very safe.
We will be back!

Hello, Thank you so much for your feedback. We're also very excited to see the final product from the lake walk renovation. Nothing beats Split Rock Lighthouse and the Superior Hiking Trail. We're so happy you were able to experience both during your visit. We're looking forward to serving you again in the near future. Thanks again! -Jesse Hinkemeyer General Manager

We’ve been coming to this hotel for many summers, but we will not be returning next year. This hotel is really starting to show its age: carpet hallways are very stained, beds creak badly, even when someone just rolls over at night. Rooms are outdated, dusty, and ours was full of spiders. The AC unit rattled so loudly we could hardly sleep, or enjoy the balcony, and it didn’t keep the room cool. From the lakeside, this property really looks rough—lots of bricks missing, white spots, rusted balconies, etc.

Many changes in service due to covid, but the price not adjusted well enough, especially when hearing what other hotels in the canal are still providing. The bagged breakfast is awful, and the exact same every day. Our family members staying at the hotel next door got hot breakfast in single serve containers at their hotel. We got a water, orange, and granola bar. No housekeeping services offered, and no way to request more towels, shampoo, etc. other than going to the front desk. You’d think they could leave a bag outside your door each day.

Another huge downfall was the behavior of other guests. Drinking in both pools and the hot tub, chairs being thrown into the rooftop pool, smoking on balconies and lakeside hotel grassy area...and no one stops them. The staff never set foot out of the back room, so the rude behavior takes over. Sad for families with young children.
Sadly, we will be looking for a different canal property for our visit next year.

Hello, Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that we let you down during this stay. A lot of the capital projects that were set for 2020 were pushed to 2021. One of the bigger projects was the brick renovation on the exterior of the building. The "white spots" that you're seeing are salt build-up called efflorescence. This happens when water gets behind the brick. We do clean it but it appears right away within a month. The underlying issue is water drainage which we're hoping to address in 2021. We price ourselves right in line with our competitors if not lower in the area and much lower than 2019 (during non-covid, non-construction times). We do offer to replace any amenities you need for stayover service and can leave them outside your door, we just need to know what is needed. Leaving a bag of replacement items without actually knowing what is needed from the guest would be a huge waste of resources and we don't want to do that to our planet. It sounds as though we did not explain this well to you at check-in and for that, we're very sorry. We're also sorry that other guests were not respectful during your visit. While outside of our control, we do have bell staff walking the property continually, though they cannot be everywhere at once. Again, we appreciate the feedback, that's how we identify weaknesses and strive to improve. If you have any additional comments or feedback, please feel free to reach out to me directly. Thank you. -Jesse Hinkemeyer General Manager (jhinkemeyer@zmchotels.com)

I spent two nights here and my experience was quite frankly ok. The rooms are 'tired' and need an overhaul. The premises are located in an ideal location however the hotel needs updates considering how expensive it is. If you are there for pleasure, wouldn't recommend however for business ok. I wish there was a hot meal for breakfast- even if packged to go- but we only had the muffins, fruits and coffee. I had pool view rooms on the groundfloor which can get a bit noisy but considering the purpose of my trip I appreciated quick access to entry/exit.

Dear Lisa, Thank you for staying with us and writing this review; through these remarks we can better our property and services. 2020 was a difficult year, and I am sure you can imagine how stressful this has been on the hospitality business. Due to COVID-19, all capital improvement projects are now planned to begin in 2021. Additionally, we are doing our best to choose grab and go items for breakfast that can be enjoyed in your guest room and that can be sanitized for guest safety. We are adapting and making changes as we receive guest feedback. Again, I personally appreciate your remarks. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to email mod@innonlakesuperior.com. I hope that you have a great evening. My best, Ricky Yates Sales and Service Associate

We have stayed at the Inn on Lake Superior a couple of times a year since 1996, always electing to stay in a king lake side room. We have recommended the hotel to friends and family because of the lake view rooms with balconies or patios, the wonderful breakfast, and friendly, helpful, courteous staff. The Inn on Lake Superior has ALWAYS been our first choice in hotel selection when we come to the north shore.
For the past few years, we have noticed a tremendous decline in the upkeep of the rooms, especially the dust in the rooms. This has been reported by many previous guests on Trip Advisor and google reviews. I understand that people leave their doors open and the dust that the horse carriages stir up challenges for housekeeping services. However, I do not understand how curtains with the hems coming out, curtain rods that are broken, toilet seats that are broken, and dirty garbage cans are overlooked by the housekeeping staff when cleaning rooms between guests.
This past visit, when we checked into our room, we found a dirty towel left in the shower on the shower curtain rod, a black hair in the tub, and a used hand towel on the towel rack in the bathroom. The bed comforter was stained with coffee or soda spots and appeared to be unclean. We took this off the bed. We found food left in the cushion on the chair, pizza behind the dresser in the bed area, thick dust behind the TVs, and general dust throughout the room. The air conditioning unit had a mud like substance on the fins. We did report the food behind the dresser and the broken curtain rod. A maintenance person came and vacuumed up the food behind the dresser. The next day, a person came to fix the drapery. We ended up going to a Walgreens and picking up cleaning supplies. When charged $339.49 per night for a room I would expect, at minimum, to have the bathroom cleaned with clean towels when first checking into a room. Upon checkout, left the room cleaner than it was when we checked in. I also cleaned the window looking out to the lake, it was so dirty. In a letter did apologize to the hotel for all the dirty towels we used to clean the room. I mailed a letter to the hotel and never received a response from the management.
I know that the hotel rooms can be cleaned better than what you are doing at the Inn on Lake Superior. Two weeks prior to our stay, we stayed at the Lift Bridge Lodge next door to your hotel and there was no dust in the rooms, the furniture did not have food in it and the carpets were vacuumed, especially the corners and behind the furniture.
We really wanted to come back to The Inn on Lake Superior in October for the fall colors, but don’t want to have to bring a vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies to clean a room that we are spending $350 a night for so we booked at the Lift Bridge Lodge next door.

I had the pleasure of staying here on required business and was very impressed with the location, cleanliness and gorgeous view of Lake Superior. What impressed me most, however, was the impeccably helpful and friendly service from the front desk crew. Carolynn, in particular, had great tips on where to get food despite the closure and information about the city in general. After hearing news about an important but unexpected event, she even packaged a small celebratory gift and left it at the room. It’s service like this that makes Carolynn and the Inn stand above the rest. Thank you!

Had reservations there this past week, and within an hour of checking in, checked right back out. I understand the no breakfast because of COVID, so no complaints about that. However, when we got to our room, the room was still dirty from prior guests. Trashes were not empty, salt on tables, and I'm not entirely sure the bedding had been changed. I called the front desk to notify them, and they said they'd send someone right up. That never happened. I waited half an hour, and realized there was no way I would be comfortable staying there knowing that during a pandemic, their cleaning practices were clearly subpar. Thankfully, I was able to check right back out with no hassle, refunded, and the place next door had an opening for us that we were able to check into with a much friendlier staff, breakfast workaround, and complimentary hand sanitizer for your stay.

Hotel is also fairly outdated compared to neighboring hotels, has stains on carpeting, and a slightly musty smell. I wont bother checking to see if The Inn has openings next time we are in town. Way too expensive for what was provided...or not provided in our case. Super bummed that this was our experience with the Inn.

We had a two night stay at this hotel. We had stayed here in the past, years ago, and were disappointed. The rooms are in need of updating. The sofa was fraying and not made up for the bed that we needed (nor were there linens in the room to do so), the table tops worn through in places and the carpet at our end of the hall was dirty and stained. Due to COVID, I brought along wipes and was glad that I did. The inside of the mini-fridge was not totally clean and the shower curtain was in need of washing. The outdoor patio set needed wiping down. I also had made ahead of time, pancakes and bacon to be reheated in the microwave and I am so glad that I did. I get the no breakfast buffet at this time, but their to go option is in serious need of help. There are brown bags that you can fill with bottled water, oranges, small granola bars and mini wrapped blueberry muffins, along with coffee. With the savings from the buffet it wouldn't have been out of line to offer cereal cups, boxes of milk or juice, yogurt and some better wrapped pastries than granola bars and mini muffins. We noticed as we walked past the other hotels on the lake that the landscaping and outdoor seating was much nice than where we were staying. The room prices aren't any less that the surrounding hotels that are in better shape. The staff was very nice and I know this can't be easy for them. They still offer s'mores makings and that is nice as well. I hope that when things pick up that they take the time to update this hotel that is in a great location.

Dear Minnesota42, Thank you for your recent stay and for taking the time to share your feedback. 2020 certainly has been a difficult year with the lake-walk construction and new Covid-19 restrictions. We are adapting and making changes as we receive guest feedback. We are operating with a limited staff at this time, as I am sure you can imagine choosing breakfast items to please a crowd isn’t the easiest. We are doing our best to choose grab and go items that can be enjoyed in your guest room and that can be sanitized for guest safety. I appreciate your suggestions. Been coming to Duluth for years, this used to be the place to come. Many of the staff were not helpful, in some cases rude, you felt like you were intruding. They all sit in the back even though there is protective barriers and masking. The physical surroundings were not maintained, patio not swept, flower beds were full of weeds, carpets are stained, wallpaper coming off the wall, brick falling off creating a hazard for young children. We watched housekeeping clean windows by making one pass with a towel and talking on the phone. When asking for towels and garbage bags, they don't even reply, just hand you the items. Parking lot had trash on it, spider webs everywhere, and they have been there awhile since Charlotte and all her relatives are living in them! Run fast! One morning found water coming through the ceiling in the lobby area, ceiling tiles bowed with weight of water, they fixed the water, but left the wet tiles??? Mold risk? Bag breakfast, same every day. Tried the bag smore's but crackers were stale.

Hello, Oh no, we pride ourselves on having excellent customer service and with a limited staff right now I know we have a great team behind us, but clearly we didn't show it during your visit. We do appreciate your feedback and are sorry we let you down. We did run this summer with a more limited landscaping program outside and brought most of it in house. The weekend of your stay in particular (Aug 22-23) I personally spent the morning grabbing spider webs as they seemed to pop up overnight (Charlotte and her relatives move quicker than you realize). This is the same weekend we had a condensation leak from a rooftop unit. We fixed the leak on Monday the 24th and replaced the tile that day. It didn't make sense to replace the tile as the last few drips were still coming down, but I do appreciate your concern. The "white spots" that you're seeing are salt build-up called efflorescence. This happens when water gets behind the brick. We do clean it but it appears right away within a month. The underlying issue is water drainage which we're hoping to address in 2021.
