Richard Haydn, a British character actor with a distinctive nasal voice who played the impressario in ”Sound of Music,” was found dead Thursday at his home in Pacific Palisades, coroner`s officials said. He was 80.

The cause of death was not immediately known, coroner`s spokesman Bill Gold said.

Mr. Haydn, born in England in 1905, was a British revue comic before coming to Hollywood, where he established his skill at prissy, eccentric roles.

His first films were ”Ball of Fire” and ”Charlie`s Aunt” in 1941, and he first gained recognition by American movie buffs as the nosy neighbor in

”Sitting Pretty.”

In the musical hit ”Sound of Music” he played the impressario and agent who put together the Trapp family`s final show.
