David McFarlan and his wife Phyllis opened their antique shop in Callander, Perthshire in 1964 and trading there for over thirty years. David had a lifelong passion for coins. Over his lifetime he assembled major collections of Scottish coins, Jacobite medallions and Byzantine gold coins, which he donated in 2019 to the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow. He also had a very wide range of interests. Seldom in a single collection will you find items as diverse as a carved chair from Benin, eighteenth century lead beggar's badges from Keith in Banffshire, a collection of Victorian jewellery, a portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie disguised as Flora MacDonald's maid Betty Burke, a Chinese cricket cage, a gold-topped walking cane made for a Scottish nobleman and a collection of memorabilia from the Glasgow Empire Exhibition, visited in 1938 by over twelve million people of which the ten year old David was one.Viewings available by appointment only on Friday the 19th of April, Monday 22nd of April to Friday 26th of April and again on Monday the 29th of April between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00pm.Lots marked TP not collected by 5pm Monday the 13th of May will be transferred to offsite storage.
