The executive producer of The White Lotus shares how he got his big break in film and television production on “the greatest TV show of all time” (Rolling Stone)

An inside look at the film industry for fans, students, and aspiring professionals — featuring a foreword by Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning creator of
The White Lotus, Mike White

This page-turning account of starting at the lowest rung on the production ladder among enormously famous & outrageously demanding people will be devoured for its insights, gossip, humor, & storytelling. Married and with a child, the author takes unpaid gigs to get a foot in the door, and eventually ends up working on all seasons of
The Sopranos, often named the best TV show ever.

The show's setting and its creator's insistence on accuracy placed the native New Jersey author in the right place at the right time to become part of television history, and to witness the effects of sudden fame and acclaim on the show's principal players.

Includes many stories about guest stars like Steve Buscemi, Peter Bogdanovich, and Lauren Bacall, as well as the beloved cast, including new tales of James Gandolfini, who Kamine first meets after David Chase casts him as the Dean of Admissions in the classic first season "College" episode. Later, after he’s been promoted, Kamine gets the calls from Gandolfini when he's hungover, or still drunk, and might or might not make it to the shoot that day. One night, Kamine tries to prevent Gandolfini from taking a swim in the ocean after they've been drinking all night, telling him it could be dangerous but Jim doesn't listen.

Woven in is a personal story of home life and strife, achievement and frustration, anxiety and accomplishment. The book's epilogue brings readers up to the moment as the author, after many more years as an anonymous everyman, eventually enjoys outsize professional success as executive producer of the HBO hit series created by Mike White,
The White Lotus.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“One finishes his book with a greater appreciation for the hard work that goes into making art on the screen.” — The Wall Street Journal

"The story of a starry career .... [and] the texture of a young working life as a cog in a vast machine."
— The Times Literary Supplement

An "absolutely wonderful memoir ... Although this book will definitely appeal to
Sopranos fans, it should also interest readers who enjoy a well-written, entertaining book about how movies and television shows get made. In an increasingly crowded genre, this is one of the best." Booklist (starred review)

“An engrossing, unique look at one man’s journey through the production of film and TV.”
Kirkus Reviews

“This tale will grab readers from the first to the last page. It’s an interesting take on what went into making The Sopranos, the Rolls Royce of cable TV.”Library Journal

“The material is eye opening, sometimes humorous, and always interesting.”
Popcultureguy.com

"A delightfully wry, frank, funny and generous account of the hard labor that goes into film and TV production, it not only takes us behind the scenes but into the alert, cultivated, observant mind of Mark Kamine. It's so well-written I found it stimulating and a pleasure to read." Phillip Lopate

“Location managers are the diplomats, finaglers and flak-catchers of the film and TV business, dealing with public officials, star-struck fans and the often unreasonable expectations of their employers- think Henry Kissinger with a bolt-cutter in the trunk of his Nissan.  Mark Kamine has shared an honest and very personal report from the trenches.” —
John Sayles

In "On Locations," Mark Kamine provides readers with a compelling chronicle of his life immersed in the captivating world of the film industry. For those curious about the intricate workings and behind-the-scenes intricacies involved in bringing episodic television and films to life, Kamine's memoir offers a thorough and insightful exploration. The author masterfully unveils the inner workings of the sausage-making process that ultimately yields the polished and glossy façade of our favorite on-screen productions.

Kamine's memoir is a rich tapestry of experiences, offering readers a glimpse into the dynamic landscape of the film industry. With a keen eye for detail and a penchant for storytelling, he seamlessly weaves together the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of his journey, accompanied by entertaining anecdotes that keep the narrative engaging and lively. Through his candid revelations, Kamine provides a genuine, personal and unfiltered look at the challenges and triumphs encountered in the pursuit of creating memorable cinematic experiences.

This memoir is not only an enjoyable read but also a valuable resource for those aspiring to understand the inner workings of the entertainment industry. ZERO stars….Wow I might has well burned $25 in a fire…absolute trash this book is. I feel scammed. Satriale’s pic on the front I thought about the Sopranos. Garbage. I never write reviews but this has me angry. Don’t waste your money. And boring to boot.

My husband said it was really boring and did not finish it. He was hoping to read about Tony Soprano but it was a book mainly about choosing the set locations for the filming of The Sopranos.

It's OK if you like the Sopranos. Some nice tidbits and behind the scene stories
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2024
I bought this book I think like most people as a fan of the Soprano's and looking for more insights into the show and the creative process. That is how this book was sold and advertised. That did not happen so I would steer clear if that is motivation for buying this book. Instead we get the experience of someone "below the line" working on shows - a guy who started as an intern, then scout coordinator, and then a line producer. Unfortunately the book isn't success at that view as well. We get many broad statements, but no insights into the work. For example, the author will write, “so-and-so was fired for subpar work." Well what does that mean? Why not give examples? What are the differences between a "good" scout manager and a "poor" one? None of that is explained. Nor does the reader gain any insight about the job. He mentions that some scout locations are bad, or that some locations owners have red flags, but never tells you what those things are. He goes into a lot of random background about himself that is just not interesting, and more importantly, not relevant. Early on there's a chapter about him going to help his father who is severally depressed, but said father is never seen, or barely referenced after the episode. There's a chapter about his failed attempt to write an episode of the Soprano's, and then another about trying to become a short story writer? I'm sorry, but this book is a mess on top of the outright lies it's marketing pushed. I would not recommend this book, and honestly after the bait and switch, I'm going to do more research before buying my next book on Amazon.

Mark's story is well written and engaging, weaves in his own life in relatable ways and is thoroughly enjoyable to read. Having worked in Locations for many years myself, I was blown away by the accuracy of how he paints a picture of what the film/tv industry is REALLY like behind the scenes. The bad reviews here are likely either 1) show fans who wanted more glitz and glamour, rather than a true account of what this world is actually like OR 2) people who are negatively depicted in this book trying to have the last word. The thing is, I can confirm that those depictions are all spot-on. And yet - Mark has the graceful tact not to call anyone out by name, when he spills the truth of their behaviors. I loved this book! If you want fluff or something that's been done before - look elsewhere; but for a solid read on what a life behind the scenes in production is truly like, this is the book .

The Sopranos tie in is a come on. It's mostly a story about someone who is obviously very self-impressed, and not a very good writer.
Very little actual inside dope.
The Sopranos plot? Gandolfini had issues. There, I just saved you $22.

This short book gives insight into what goes on behind the camera in the making of a successful movie or series. Kamine also gives you a look into how he coped with the stresses of becoming a location manager, while keeping his marriage and family on track. The book is very well written: the prose is crisp and clear and direct; the descriptions are vivid; the incidents and observations often makes you chuckle, especially as they're tossed off in passing and not belabored.
One passage on theater (p. 178) stands out: He writes he would go to see a friend's "plays and look on in joy and wonder at people who seemed to be exactly where they wanted to be, up on stage, making a living pretending to be things they were not."
It's a fun book but not without depth. I confess it's also catnip for anyone interested in The Sopranos and other movies like Men in Black II, Treetops Lounge, etc.
Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy read

Whilst I enjoyed it somewhat, it was hyped as a behind the scenes view of the making of the Sopranos and details of Jim's behaviour on set, yet that was a very, very small part of the book.
