For some reason, the writer decided it might be a good idea to show two of the male characters sitting on a toilet (not together :) ) For the life of me I don't get why this is a necessary thing in this (or most any) story--it isn't, or course. The show has a listless, self-cancelling quality. Beautiful exteriors, and good acting, save it somewhat.

I watched it because it's an entertaining genre and premise -- pretty people in pretty scenery, uncovering dark secrets from the past within a longstanding group friendship, with #metoo themes about sexual assault and how public attitudes towards rape have changed, maybe. But the execution was not great. First, it's off putting and confusing that everybody looks more or less the same -- it's just generic blond people -- and we're supposed to believe that the younger and older versions of each character are the same, despite the fact that the older ones look nothing like the younger ones, and older ones are obviously chosen for looks, if female, and for character expression, if male. More substantially, this is a really weak examination either of the passing of time, or of sexual assault. It's SO obvious that it's written by two dudes, who made no effort to consult women in the writing or imagination of the show. Perspective is almost exclusively the guy characters, not the women, and the twist at the end is that we're supposed to think the women, in their fairly milk-toast attempt at revenge for a gang rape and massive cover up, are somehow just as culpable as the guys. COME ON ALREADY, IF YOU'RE GONNA ADDRESS THIS THEME AT ALL, THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY TONE DEAF WAY TO DO IT. I kept watching because I'd put in the time already to figure out the ridiculous casting, but it was really not good at all, despite a couple of good performances and some nice scenery.

Once you've made the effort to match up the current day characters with their younger selves then this series gets more interesting with each episode. Glad I did not give up on it too soon. Well worth a watch!

very cleverly written series (six episodes) about a group of friends suffering the consequences of mistakes made in the past. The two summers are (1) in Belgium (I think) in one of the character's (Didier) family country home when the friends are about 20 years old and then, 30 years later, on an island on the Côte d'Azur, where they spend a pretty tormented 'holiday' raking over a fateful night 30 years ago. Acting is good, plot is clever, and gradually revealed, Much better than an Agatha Christie who-dunnit in an English country house. I guess the gender-based plot (basically: women getting their own back on the men) is a relevant issue. The very last twist of the plot is left open-ended, but I didn't find that a serious problem. Six episodes is about right, I felt: not overly long drawn out (like, for example, Netflix's Bloodline). All the character come over as individuals, which is quite an achievement in group drama.
