Anna and Adam, a young couple from Paris with Polish Jewish origins, leave for the first time of their lives in Poland. They were invited to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the destruction of the birth village community of Adam's grandfather. If Adam is not very excited about this trip, Anna is excited to discover the land that is also her grandmother's. Finally - from what little she knows. Here they are, looking for their origins in a journey full of surprises, during which they will not find exactly what they came for.

A really lovely film about a young french couple, and her exploration of their Jewish heritage in Poland, and even more so, the erasing of Jewish history. When you come from a family who lost lives and homes and faith during the Holocaust, you live with a silence, and you learn that your heritage is shared with all the Jews in your community, or you hold that silence in your heart for life.
And what a cute and sad movie about it.
Also there's a scene where she shrieks and sobs over borscht she doesn't like and wishes she was dead because of borscht and that shit speaks my language.

Anna destaca o desconforto de não poder saber mais sobre sua história, por tudo que lhes foi tirado, mas o peso desse desconforto destoa da leveza com que todo o restante da viagem é tratada, explicitada até no romantismo do título. Apesar disso é um filme bonito, que fala sobre fazer as pazes com a memória e a ancestralidade que se ausenta na impossibilidade de tornar tangível aquilo que se perdeu, e sobre os possíveis caminhos futuros com aquilo que se tem em mãos.

My Polish Honeymoon. This film is way too close to my own experience for me to get the distance necessary to be a critical observer. Like the director, my relatives died in the Holocaust. Like the director, I've visited the Polish home towns of my parents. This movie is mostly flashback for me.
A young Jewish Parisian married couple visits Poland for a memorial service for some family members who died in the Holocaust. My Polish Honeymoon is part buddy travel comedy and part tragedy. Like an album full of formulaic pop songs with one good tune hidden in the middle.
My Polish Honeymoon has nothing in common with the film whose title it plagiarized. It's the story of a young, Jewish couple who leave their 1-year-old to make a pilgrimage to Poland to commemorate the destruction during WWII of an ancestor's village, and the hilarity that ensues along the way.
Because how could one not laugh at jokes like:
"Don't worry, I'm not going to drink a lot of vodka." Then, 5 minutes later, "Oops, I drank a lot of vodka." Then, the next day, "I'm not going to drink too much vodka." Then, 5 minutes later, "Oops, I drank too much vodka."

Examining important topics such as personal identity and racism, the film has the potential to be great. However, director Élise Otzenberger’s choice to portray Anna’s obsession with Poland in such an over-the-top fashion made most of the situational humor come across as painfully awkward. It also made it hard to root for her, even when her motivations for going to Poland — to finally learn about her family history, something many descendants of Holocaust survivors struggle with — are made clear.

My Polish Honeymoon is a delightful little French film that is light and fun most of the time, while occasionally feeding his strong undercurrent of parental anxiety and ancestral unease. I laughed a lot more than I expected to at the fun banter between lead characters, and when they decide to turn away from the comedy in more dramatic moments I really felt the emotional weight being expressed. What I find most impressive about My Polish Honeymoon is that there really is no external conflict — just a few people trying to better come to terms with who they are and where they came from. With its very likable characters, great balance of emotion, and enough directorial flair to make it feel visually unique, I definitely recommend this film.
