Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This was a perfect escape and with the usual JW service. We booked a villa and it was spacious, clean, private and comfortable. Spacious bedroom, bathroom, living room and patio. Our own walled garden with a 12m pool, room service and a short walk to the beach which is wild and undeveloped, palm trees on the shoreline, but too wild to swim with big and complicated waves rolling in; soft sand and long walks possible. Set back a few hundred metres are one 5* hotel after another along the bay, but not crowded and they do not impinge on the shoreline which is open to the public. We found a great Indonesian restaurant at Barbacoa at Edition a half hour walk up the beach. At JW as vegetarians it took a bit of time to get our needs recognised and a menu sorted out, but appreciated the support of F&B manager Hannah, the care of Cassie who arranged the booking and a car hire for the day and Kenneth who looked after us each breakfast. We checked out many other hotels along this bay and in Yalong Bay and for us, none compared. If you want a busy resort with loud music go somewhere else. Also if you want a good and varied international menu. We do think that is a consequence of few foreign visitors during the COVID impacted first year of this new JW, which had its first anniversary during our stay. We will certainly be back, we will book a villa again and hope the JW will hire an international chef to make sure that the items on the table match description on the menu! With Appreciation!

This property is very generous for Marriott titanium members. We three adults received free breakfast buffet, received two sanitary sets of Hermes, and received a big fruit dishes daily. This property provided free shuttle bus from/to Sanya airport. Pools and gardens were fantastic. The whole resort seems like a colonial Spanish estate. Breakfast was super delicious with a variety of western and local cuisines. Overall, highly recommend this luxurious resort to everyone.

We liked the cosy atmosphere in this hotel, not the newest Hotel but well mentained and big rooms with comfortable atmosphere. Main issue is the english language but with the help of the concierge Lucas we had only few language barrieres. Food was very good, SPA is nice and the pool area very big, we where almost alone during the day. The staff prepared our favorite drinks and tried to be helpful even if they did not understand.

Rebranded but not upgraded, this hotel does not match JW Marriott standards... Chinese restaurant is shared with Sheraton, overall infrastructures are falling in pieces, many fountains and pool area are not working. Staff in front office, restaurants and bar are nice. Housekeeping and pool staff are watching videos on their phone at the view of the clients. Urgent change: the kids playground (first picture). This is unacceptable...

Great services and room layout. Best lobby bar in Haitang Bay. Fantastic music and enjoy the white wine at the night will visit again with my wife and daughters SANYa not changed a lot but the JW still the best of the privacy provided. I hope we can stay longer

We stayed 7 nights here. We stayed in two bed room villa with swimming pool, great experience! The breakfast is very good. Everyday the rooms were well cleaned and arranged. Pretty good service. The beach is also very clean. We will revisit here again.

Stayed here for two nights and everything was great, you can also access Sheraton's facilities while you are staying here. The room, service, pool and amenities are absolutely luxurious.. The restaurant The Begonia serves a scrumptous dinner and breakfast, would highly recommend just dining in. The highly recommended seafood bbq buffet offered by Sheraton was really mediocre though.

Already kind of knew there were going to be some problems since the hotel had such a poor air shuttle service. But anyways my wife and I took a cab there it cost us 200 rmb we had to give the taxi driver an extra 40 because it was so far out from the airport and we didn't want to be left on the side of the road.
I called the hotel to get the right directions except...the hotel sent us to the Sheraton next door instead of the royal begonia we asked how to get to the royal begonia from there...and they said they would get a golf cart to take us over...after waiting 30 minutes...no ride...we asked again the bell boy forgot about us completely and went to go ask..we ended up walking over there with our suitcase.
When we arrived there the bell hop at the royal begonia took our bags and we checked in. Another thing that bothered me is if I'm staying and paying for 3 nights shouldn't I get 3 breakfast meals? For some reason if you stay 3 nights you are only permitted to have breakfast twice. However after checking in no one bothered to help with our suitcases to the room....
Opening the room and walking in I must say the designer did a great job with this place it really looks like heaven. Great view of the ocean. We had a room with an ocean view which was great. We walked around some more after putting our stuff down, and walked around the surrounding area is quite nice. For dinner we went to izuya the restaurant by the beach at the Sheraton it was quite nice.
The next day I went to the pool for a swim before going to breakfast. The place is kind of deserted in the morning and since I was wearing a light blue jacket I guess everyone thought i worked here and kept asking me for directions. The hotel really needs to have more people on the grounds there were a lot of lost people that day. The breakfast was great it had a lot of stuff and was really fresh. However, as my wife and I left the breakfast place "poof" white smoke filled the air. I covered my mouth and realized they were spraying bug spray all over the place....c'mon at 11 am when people are done eating you spray bug spray? That is really inconsiderate.
My wife and I then spent the rest of the day at the beach. The beach is really nice and quiet and kind of makes up for the incompetent staff working at the hotel.
we ate dinner at the royal begonia first floor they had a nice variety of western food.
The second day in the morning I went for a swim at 915. I suddenly got smacked in the face with cleaning equipment that was carelessly left in the pool. I guess the staff are kind of on holiday at this resort as well ?
Later that day my wife and I went to the upstairs area on the third floor to have afternoon tea. There were some people smoking so we moved to a corner where there wasn't anyone. However later another smoking group came and we asked if the waitress there could ask them to move to the big table where the other people were smoking....now what she said was just really odd she said in chinese that it wasn't her responsibility for her to ask those people and told me to ask myself...after kind of being stunned for five seconds and wondered if I was staying at a one star hotel I asked that group to move myself and they did without any trouble.
Summary,
The hotel facilties are amazing. This is one of the best and most well designed facilities I've stayed at.
Kind of out of the way. They do have shuttles into town.
1 year from now a huge duty free shop will be constructed in this area.
Beautiful view of the ocean ugly view of construction on the other side.

If you can get over the fact that you have to serve and service yourself in a 5 star hotel then this place is pretty good.

My girlfriend and I just returned from this jewel on the South China Sea. As a Luxury Collection branded property, we expected a lot and The Royal Begonia did not disappoint. We arranged a chauffeured transfer In their house S-class MBZ complete with wifi service (super cool for the international travelers). The ride to the hotel is about 30 minutes, totally comfortable, some high-end magazines to pass the time if needed. We were greeted by several staffers upon arrival and we were given these great little shell necklaces as arrival gifts. We enjoyed the Abel Spa as a couple, we lounged the days away in one of the great little hidden enclaves throughout the property. We swam, we rented segways and rode them on the beach, we ate like kings on a daily basis, but perhaps best of all:
While touring the grounds on the first day, we spotted a jetty at the beach, a raised stone jetty that juts out into the water about 15-20 feet above the surface. It's obviously very new and quite romantic place to watch a sunset. I asked the hotel manager: Aaron Loy if he had ever had allowed a couple to have a dinner there. He replied that he had not, but that they would love the chance to provide such a romantic time for us. He arranged a very special menu and even brought their 5-star chef "Maurizio" to meet us and discover our likes and dislikes. The next evening we had the time of our lives. Aaron even surprised us by having their house-band come out and sing a quick set of love songs for our enjoyment. They went so far beyond what would be considered luxury service that its almost inexplicable...seriously!
Our room had a view that rivals the best Hawaiian beach, and its own private pool and backyard. Every member of the staff made it their personal goal to see to it that we were happy and wanted for nothing during our stay. There were several standout employees: Aaron Loy of course was the conductor for the most romantic night of my life thus far. There was Kamal Sanusi, who I believe oversees both the Luxury Collection & Sheraton properties (as they share some amenities). Gustavo, my buddy from Portugal who made sure that our coffee was dead-on balls accurate every morning (which is not easy :)
The hotel staff is eager to customize your stay however you'd like. If you need tons of care, they'll give it, if you want privacy, they'll respect it. It's 5-star luxury at its very finest. Every piece of chrome is polished, the frette linens felt brand-new, every piece of fruit is perfectly sliced. 'Life' is in the details, and they absolutely understand that at The Royal Begonia. If the opportunity to return to Hainan arises, I will not even look at another hotel to stay at, I'll go straight back to Phillipp (the sous chef at The Begonia) and have him make me a Luxury Collection Pizza with no black olives.
Two thumbs up for this property. They're craftsman at making memories.

We just visited for a long weekend with our family of 4 and stayed in one of the pool suites. The room was huge and nice, as was the attached pool but it just wasn’t polished or super clean. Dust on most of the lampshades, the tub shower sprayer didn’t work properly, pillow cushions were missing for some outdoor chairs, cleaning staff didn’t remove or replace dirty coffee pots or cups etc, little minor things like that just added up all over the resort. Just seems like for such a nice resort the attention to details is really lacking. I think the staff are trying but I honestly didn’t feel that the stay was exceptional or special, like I’ve felt at other marriotts. That said, the resort was very quiet and peaceful and the beach area the same. Food was also decent, but again, one night we tried to order a bottle of white wine with dinner and were told there’s no more white wine in the hotel?! Seemed a bit weird and unlikely....but who knows. My family had a relaxing time and I will say the hotel was more relaxing than the neighboring Sheraton, so I would definitely opt for the Begonia over Sheraton, but if visiting again I would probably check out a different place all together.
