Because of convenience of flight schedules, generally friendly staff and ease of using mileage, I try as often as possible to use Philippine Airlines (PAL) internationally. I always console myself with the thought that on long or short flights, I will just take a nap so I do not have to be bothered by the very poor in-flight entertainment and fast food-like meals for the economy class. However, now that PAL has been rated a four-star airline by Skytrax, they should try to be at par with their Asian airline counterparts. On the Mla-Fukuoka flight that I rode late last month, they served what looked and tasted like the sweet-sour fish fillet that one finds in a Phil fastfood chain. And the flight attendant said it was Japanese food! Their dessert was some pastry that is sold in another fastfood chain in the Philippines.
I tried using the in-flight entertainment but one needs to have your own device with internet. I did have one but I was not told to download the app before boarding the flight so couldnt watch the movies or TV shows. On the return flight, I downloaded the app but my phone was on low power mode already but there was no USB port to charge while watching so again, I didnt have the chance to experience this much touted “personal viewing experience” again. Since the food was prepared in Japan, at least the rice was okay. Hope PAL does something about this to truly deserve the promotion to a four start airline.
