Economy class - Review of Philippine Airlines (PAL) - Tripadvisor

“Economy class”
Review of Philippine Airlines (PAL)

Reviewed April 10, 2018

I normally fly Business class but on short duration flight of less than 4 hours I try for Premium Economy. This last flight I had to fly economy. Other than crying children, small cramped seating and only 2 working toilets for the entire 250 passengers, the flight was difficult. I've learned my lesson with PAL, pay for upgrades. I flown economy on a asian airline for the last time. I will either curtail my travels or budget more money for a better than lowest class seat.

Pilots did a great job. On time and smooth flight. Flight stewardess lacking in Service. Did not even check the guest. Request water during serving and they always runout since we are at the back. Will tell us will be back but takes forever.

Food was terrible. Rice is very hard. Meat taste so bad. Fruits very soggy. I wanted water during our flight but no stewardess are available.

There should be an attendant checking on guest every hour since this is a 12 hour flight.

This was a very short flight which was right on time and uneventful. Flight crew were very pretty and courteous; there was even a complimentary snack and bottled water offered. Baggage allowance is not very generous for checked bags, 10 kilos/person only (one 20 kilo bag for two people was fine). The check-in guy allowed us some slight extra weight without charge. If you arrive with a full complement of international luggage, you will need to work something out or expect to more than double your ticket price.

Because of convenience of flight schedules, generally friendly staff and ease of using mileage, I try as often as possible to use Philippine Airlines (PAL) internationally. I always console myself with the thought that on long or short flights, I will just take a nap so I do not have to be bothered by the very poor in-flight entertainment and fast food-like meals for the economy class. However, now that PAL has been rated a four-star airline by Skytrax, they should try to be at par with their Asian airline counterparts. On the Mla-Fukuoka flight that I rode late last month, they served what looked and tasted like the sweet-sour fish fillet that one finds in a Phil fastfood chain. And the flight attendant said it was Japanese food! Their dessert was some pastry that is sold in another fastfood chain in the Philippines.
I tried using the in-flight entertainment but one needs to have your own device with internet. I did have one but I was not told to download the app before boarding the flight so couldnt watch the movies or TV shows. On the return flight, I downloaded the app but my phone was on low power mode already but there was no USB port to charge while watching so again, I didnt have the chance to experience this much touted “personal viewing experience” again. Since the food was prepared in Japan, at least the rice was okay. Hope PAL does something about this to truly deserve the promotion to a four start airline.
