The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is the embodiment of both a special time and a special place. For well over a century, this remarkable hotel - known simply as 'The E&O' to generations of travellers - has stood as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. In many ways, it has also come to represent Penang itself; its story inextricably woven into the island's history, its traditions an indelible part of many a traveller's treasured memory, its name synonymous with the magical island once known as The Pearl Of the Orient.

We stayed 7 nights in a king suite in the ‘heritage wing’. The main building of the hotel is a tower block (albeit a beautiful one!), the heritage wing being a smaller 3 storey building linked by a walkway. If you can stretch your budget, the heritage wing is well worth the extra cost. The heritage wing just exudes luxury from the palm tree lined ground floor orangery, to exclusive use of the Cornwallis room for breakfast, the ground level oceanside pool and the beautiful domed entranceway where the front desk is situated, plus additional room amenities including complimentary in room drinks and nibbles as well as complimentary wine and cocktails each evening, again in the ocean view Cornwallis room.
The rooms are just as good. Our suite was 55sqm excluding the balcony (again, well worth paying extra), with views out over the ocean. With just a private walkway between the hotel and the water, it’s quiet & peaceful on the balcony during the evening. The bed and bedding is ultra comfortable, the living area well furnished with quality pieces and the bathroom a statement in luxury with marble and mirrors, twin ceramic handbasins, a beautiful bath just made for relaxing in whilst sipping a decadent G & T and a shower that was the same size as the whole bathroom on the boat we’d just been on the week before. High quality toiletries provided and not a piece of single use plastic in sight.
Staff and service were excellent and the feedback we did provide was responded to immediately, always the sign of excellent hotel staff. Unreserved recommendation.

We had originally booked at the Victory Annexe as we weren’t sure the Heritage wing refurb would be completed on time.

The arrival and greeting there (Victory) was terrible with a harassed desk clerk just pointing us to the lift by way of welcome. The room, though large, was not in great condition (eg scuff marks on the walls and a stained sheet on the bed.)
Desk staff at the Heritage wing couldn’t have been more helpful when we explained we wished to switch to accommodation there and we took a similar (sea view, king) room.
The Heritage refurb was indeed complete and the hotel looks fabulous: gleaming glass and polished wood and tiles everywhere plus terrific new teak parquet flooring.
The new bedroom (suite) was spotlessly clean and large (big bathroom and separate sitting area) and its Victorian furniture and fittings not at all “tired” as with the Annexe.

Lovely pool area (for the use of Heritage guests only) with brand new sun-beds and other poolside furniture, changing rooms in very good order. Extremely relaxing watching the big ships glide in and out of Penang harbour while you sit under a palm tree sipping a cold drink!

Some service management issues though which shouldn’t arise in a hotel of this standing. Some were just matters of detail/supervision like eccentric housekeeping habits: some waste bins not emptied some days, bathroom supplies not replenished. More serious though, and as reported by another visitor, breakfast service in the Cornwallis Room (just for the use of Heritage guests) was very poor one morning: breakfast serving utensils and butter not put out, tables not cleared while staff stood around and, in the middle of the Corona virus scare, we saw a besuited manager ignore the fact that a waiter was coughing and sneezing over guests and instead stop to re-arrange a cushion on a settee. (After a complaint by a guest the waiter disappeared).

So, overall Very Good rather than Excellent : desk staff at the Heritage wing efficient and charming and that part of the hotel a delight to stay in now it’s restored to its former glory; Victory Annexe felt very second rate by comparison so, if you can afford to, opt for the Heritage wing; dinner food and service good in the Java tree (get a table outside); afternoon tea scrumptious; breakfast food in the Cornwallis OK; some service management issues in Cornwallis and housekeeping (which, to be fair, could have been exceptions).

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for 2 days in a corner suite in the Victory Annexe. At the time of booking the Heritage Annexe was being refurbished and I wasn't sure it would be available.

First impressions count and the welcome from the doorman and the collection of our luggage from the hotel arranged transport from the airport was very good.

The Check-in process wasn't quite so good. We didn't get much information regarding the hotel and the facilities available to us. Someone showed us to our room, but that didn't really help us navigate the hotel and its facilities. Instead we got a standard printed page outlining the various services and facilities within the hotel, including breakfast and dining options.

The room itself was fabulous, with a wrap around balcony offering great views of the sea and the shoreline, a large sitting room and comfortable bedroom. The bathroom was huge and the double shower was one of the best I have ever experienced. Room servicing wasn't great and we never had any ice delivered to the room either in the morning full service or in the evening turn down, which is not the standard I would expect. The room hadn't been serviced one day when we got back at 1.30pm, which I think isn't good enough.

We didn't have dinner at the hotel and chose to have breakfast in Sarkies each morning, which offered a very broad range of food options. Service was reasonably efficient and the food quality average rather than exceptional.

Perhaps the biggest let down for us was the swimming pool area located on the 6th floor. Each day we went there it was fully utilised. There just didn't seem to be enough beds or space for the number of guests. We had lunch there one day and the service was extremely slow, with not enough people covering the tables and sun beds.

The major source of our frustration was discovering the we could have used the ground floor pool area set aside for the Heritage wing guests. This was one of the line items on the page of services but we just didn't pick it up. After a busy day sight seeing around George Town it would have been great to have been able to go for a swim and laze by the pool for a couple of hours.

Overall an enjoyable stay which could have been that bit better had there been more information provided as part of the check-in process, perhaps with the offer of a tour of the hotel and its facilities - particularly as it is such a large place.

we have been connected to the E&O prior to its closure and over the last few years have spent in excess of 50 nights. So it was great anticipation that we visited 1-10 January 2020. We originally stayed in the Heritage wing until we had a mishap with the flooding A/cond a few years back and we moved to the Victory wing. We accepted the Hertitage wing could not use the Planters Lounge as we accept that currently you can not use the Cornwallis lounge staying in the Victory wing. However new management has declared you may not use both pools as was the past practice. We fell in love with the balconies in the Victory wing however the pool has always had mold/algae at water level, and its final step into the pool is twice the size of others and ingress and egress is difficult if you are mobility limited and the pool is always chilly because it is under a building. The hertigae pool is better temp and easier ingress and egress. Mould killer wouldn't go astray in a number of rooms we have had eg 1107 around and below the shower shelf.

Dining has been changed, gone is the intimacy of 1885 replaced with fish bowl dining in Java Tree and accessed through their 2nd level restaurant Palm Court. The menu has changed to a cookie cutter standard 4 star hotel; gone are the specialty dishes or the nod to the past of fish and chips. Farquar bar has lost its ambiance even though they seemed to have moved it back to where it was previously; no happy hour, no draft beer, no ambiance and no patronage. Gone are the nice colonial furniture on the terrace and replaced by cheap HN patio furniture and if there is more than two dining the table strains to accommodate the new plates which are OTT why do you need an 18 inches by 8 inches oval plate to serve on serve of naan bread.

In all very disappointing, gone is warm welcome of the flowers in Heritage reception there is no getting away from a need to upgrade. However when you compare how the Majestic KL integrated and old and new wing and you look at the E&O you feel disappointed.

We used the Rasa while they did renos and I think value for money and the use of Grab it is a better option - the pools are better there are balconies and there is a 2 hr happy hour and dining options are relaxed. I feel for the staff now they have three breakfast points (2 lounges and Sarkies) and they seemed to have stretched less staff over the venues - service and interaction with the staff has been lost. After being out all day we chose to dine in the Palm Court we waited 40 minutes plus for food to appear, we had booked as hotel guests we were not there for anything else other than a meal and there were only 4 other tables there most well advanced in their dining.

If you observe the new Management issuing directions to the staff they appear more interested in their mobile phones or the new floor tiles than engaging with the guests. Thank goodness for the long standing staff who are welcoming and charming beyond reproach.

We appreciate sincerely your honest remarks about the renovation of our Heritage Wing, and we are extremely sorry you did not enjoy your experience when you stayed again with us recently. The Heritage Wing needed necessary upgrades last year, and we used the opportunity to create variety in our food and beverage offerings as well, which we have done by including opening Planters ( 6th floor Victory Annexe wing) to the public, and so far we have had very good response to any changes we have made. The spaces in The Heritage Wing were under utilised for the last couple of years, including 1885 and so it was very important we remodelled them to make them workable. Naturally however, we never wish to keep guests waiting unnecessarily for their food so I apologise for your delay in being served in Palm Court when you ate there. We endeavour to make sure our guests have an enjoyable and memorable stay with us, and this we are fully committed to doing daily . I do hope in the future you may visit us again as you are a valued repeat guest, and we would like to reassure you with gaining a renewed confidence in us. Many thanks again for your comments Regards Management

Great service from checking in to leaving. Special thanks to Daniel, Josman and Kamal for making our stay so special 😊.

We ate in Sarkies and the food was of the highest quality. Nothing was too much trouble, we only had to ask and Kamal arranged it for us. Thank you so much for our special table x.

The room was immaculate and tastefully decorated. Room service at least twice a day with the added touch of our sheets being turned back and a drink being placed on our bedside table on an evening.

One of the best hotels I have stayed in and would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

We stayed 3 nights in the Heritage Wing of this old established but recently refurbished hotel. There is also an annexe which is an adjacent tower block which was crowded with conference delegates. We were very glad we weren’t staying there. However the allegedly recently refurbished heritage wing was also a disappointment and we had to be shown 3 bedrooms before settling on a twin bed room even though we asked for a king bed. The reason for this was that they don’t seem to understand that international travellers require wardrobe space. The first room we were shown had such a tiny freestanding wardrobe that we would have had to leave virtually all our clothes in our suitcases. The 3rd room shown had a walk in wardrobe which was fine but the bathroom hadn’t been refurbished despite the front desk claiming it had. More disturbing was that the bathroom wasn’t clean and we had to ask them to remove hair and general dirt from the floor. Worse was that the pillows and bedding had a peculiar smell and although they were changed daily the small remained . Breakfast was a shambles with poor choice and bad service . This was surprising as their afternoon tea was superb and dinner was also good. On the plus side the hotel is in a good location and has a nice pool in the heritage wing and they serve complimentary drinks and canapés during the evening happy hour although they insist on men having to wear long trousers inside despite this being a holiday hotel.
Overall we were
disappointed with our stay and think the hotel is overrated.

We do value your constructive feedback as it allows us to improve the service which we deliver to our most discerning guests. There's a reason why I keep coming back to the E&O. The lavish rooms, the impeccable services, the sumptuous meals, and of course, the way all of these elements come together & make me feel so relaxed, so pampered... in short, at the E&O I'll be happy knowing I'm in good hands.

Every single experience that I've had at the E&O has been extremely pleasant. The staff go out of their ways to give you personalized services with an extra touch of opulence & elegance.

The rooms I've stayed in have all been in pristine conditions. Naturally I prefer to book at the Heritage wing and their rooms are of the highest standards of design, cleanliness, amenities, and spaciousness. This is luxury at its best, and those little touches like a personalized welcome card, fresh fruits in the room, exceptional turndown service, personal butler... these are the things that make E&O, E&O.

The meals that I've had at this hotel have all been great and exceeded my expectations. The best is Sarkies of course and if you happen to stay on a Friday or Saturday night, you MUST check out their buffet dinner. You need to reserve your table in advance though as they're also open to non hotel guests and its one of the most sought after buffet dinners in Penang.

Other dining places like Palm Court, Java Tree and The Cornwallis offer a luxurious ambience and tastefully prepared dishes that will blow your mind.

But nothing compares to the level of impeccable service that the E&O provides, that simply makes you feel sooo appreciated, celebrated even. From the concierge to the front desk to the room services to the F&B... everyone goes out of their ways to male your stay as memorable as possible. And this is what makes E&O stand out from the crowd.

Special kudos to their front desk staff Loong, Vanisha, Eza and Shinrou (I may get the spellings wrong) and the rooms division manager Jimmy.

Also, if you happen to dine at Sarkies, look for David and he & the team will attend to you in an excellent way that'll keep you coming back again & again (as in my case).

In short, the E&O is a place like no other, and every time I visit, I will make at least one new friend with their staff. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

I have been to Penang many times before and have always wanted to stay in this beautiful hotel right in the centre of Georgetown. The building itself is very impressive and the entire decor inside this building has a very rustic colonial feel which reminds me of the 50s and 60s building. The hotel is very well maintained despite its age and every single item works perfectly well. There are only suites in the hotel and the suites are very spacious! There is a living room, large bathroom with a bathtub, separate shower and toilet and his and hers basin. The common areas are well kept and clean and you will feel more like at home than in a hotel as everyone from the doorman, waiters and waitress to house keeping staffs are very friendly. Since this is now the RMCO period, breakfast will be on a la carte with a few selections. No complains as the food are great and tasty and I think I have gain a few extra pounds now! Loved the egg benedict with salmon! The pool was very nice spot for a good tan and relaxing, with the constant sounds of the ocean waves hitting the rocks. Hotel wasn't very crowded during my stay which made it even more perfect. Kudos to all the friendly staffs there for a magnificent 6 star service! Will definitely be back again!

My husband & I have just spent the past week staying in this exceptional hotel. We became engaged in Penang & 35 years later we returned to celebrate this milestone. From the time we arrived right through to departure every aspect of our stay was perfectly executed. The gentleman who escorted us to our room was incredibly passionate about the hotel & somewhat incredibly he remembered the restaurant where we had become engaged,,& which no longer exists.
On our first morning, whilst having breakfast at the Planters Lounge we were speaking with Wan & after telling him why we had chosen to stay at the E&O he said ‘ welcome home ‘. Somehow that sentiment summed up the essence of our stay,. This is a hotel that transcends normal expectations & faultlessly delivers both in terms of its history & most importantly its staff. Every interaction we had was memorable, all staff were kind, efficient & incredibly helpful.
We stayed in a corner suite in the Victory Annexe, which comprised a large sitting room, separate bedroom, two bathrooms & a perfectly positioned claw foot bath facing out to sea. Housekeeping did a wonderful job & the evening turndown service was extremely thorough. As others have mentioned each suite in both wings offers alcoholic decanters & complimentary soft drinks, along with a selection of nuts & chocolates.
During our stay we chose to eat breakfast in the Planters Lounge. The service there was excellent & it was very special to be able to look out over the sea each morning.
The pool area on the 6th floor is ideal for relaxation with fabulous views in all directions & the pool attendants were constantly refilling our glasses with iced water.
As we were in a corner suite we were able to avail ourselves of evening canapés & drinks in the Cornwallis Lounge which is situated in the Heritage Wing. I didn’t get the name of the gentleman who manages this lounge, but he does a brilliant job! On the second night when we walked in he already knew what our drinks order was & he was always checking on guests to ensure they were being well looked after.
A special thank you also to Nagesh, who assisted us in making a restaurant booking & also farewelled us. Her charm & dignity is an asset to the hotel.
Due to our flight being cancelled we asked at reception if it would be possible to slightly extend our check out time. The very kind manager immediately said ‘ of course ‘, which further reinforced our belief that this hotel is exceptional in every respect.
We would like to extend our gratitude to management, and staff at this superb hotel for making our stay so memorable. Our thoughts are already turning to a return visit in the near future.
Highly recommended.

We stayed in the newly redone Heritage Wing and our room was wonderful with a stunning view straight out to sea. There was a balcony which, although small, was never in full sun and that allowed us to use it whenever we wanted. The bathroom was generous with two separate basins, a shower cabinet and a bath.
The staff were all wonderful even those who greeted us on our arrival at 11pm. They were at all times warm, caring and trying their hardest. The breakfast buffet was amazing with more choices than you could imagine. The breakfast chefs made me special gluten free Indian pancakes and Dahl for breakfast which I really appreciated. There is loads to do in Penang too so we had a fabulous time.

I prepaid on the E&O website then paid at the end of my stay using Amex. You could probably pay cash MYR but you would still have to pay the money changer's turn.

Hi Mark, if youre into that colonial feel, then the best is to go with Heritage Wing suite! its really nice and give you that heritage kind of feel! i stayed in Heritage Wing, both the pools is nice, you still have access to both the pools no matter which wing youre in. There are full of history on their wall that you can check out and the gallery too. Dont forget to check out the echo-dome lobby. You can check out the packages via their website but i would suggest to try Heritage wing. All the best
