The actress, best known for her role as Ada Shelby in the hit period drama, returns with her cast-mates following the sudden death of co-star Helen McCrory, who took a starring role as Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray.

McCrory passed away aged 52 in April 2021 following an undisclosed battle with cancer, and Sophie admitted both cast and crew were shattered by the unexpected news of her passing.

She told Metro: 'It was horrible and we were all devastated. I think that everybody felt that, whether you’d ever met her or not whether you’d work with her or not, I think the whole nation felt that it was devastating.'

Show costume designer Alison McCosh also admitted they were keen to keep her spirit alive through fashion conscious Ada's choice of clothing - a decision Rundle fully supported.

She said: 'So we did just that, Sophie loved that idea and that was a way for me to have Polly move on through Ada.

'It was hard because I didn’t want to let her go. I didn’t want to let Polly go. It was quite emotional, but also, it felt right and so we decided to do that.'

Sophie confirmed the arrival of the couple's newborn son by sharing a photo on her Instagram page in April.

The actress wrote alongside the image: 'Our little boy, who arrived safely and happily over the Easter weekend and changed the game forever. My little egg. My overflowing, grateful heart.'

Sophie met and began her relationship with Matt in 2016 while they were filming Sky One series Jamestown.
