Work Trip to Haifa

Hello,

My partner is due to travel to Haifa next week for a work trip. We are not very familiar with the country and wondered if there is any specific advice anyone can share. Unfortunately he is not going to have any time off to explore the area but he is hoping to get out for meals etc - what should he wear? Is long trousers required or are shorts ok? We have packed a Type H and Type C Travel adaptor, is that the correct ones? I cannot think of any other specific questions at the moment but would lobe to hear any advice you think would be handy - thank you in advance!

Israel is a very informal country and shorts are fine, assuming he isn't going to very upscale places.

Yes, plugs H and C. You don't say where you are from (it helps to put the name of your country or city in your profile), but if it's North America his appliances won't work on the different voltage, unless they are dual voltage.

Advice could run into hundreds of pages, but without any clue as to what sort of "advice" you are looking for it's difficult to answer. For example, would he be using public transport? There are no cash fares on buses. There is no point in going into detail about how to pay for bus rides if it's not relevant. Taxis: the driver *must* use the meter if the passenger requests it. Locals, who know what is a reasonable fare for a journey, would happily agree to a set fare, but clueless tourists are likely to be ripped off. Insist on a proper print-out receipt (which will reduce the likelihood of a grossly inflated price). Most taxi drivers are honest, but the same as anywhere in the world, there are those who take advantage of naive tourists.

Israel is generally a very safe country. Mugging is just about unknown, but there are pickpockets, and the same as anywhere in the world, one should take sensible precautions - don't walk around with phone sticking out of back pocket, don't go down dark alleys alone at night, and so on. Don't leave bags unattended unless he wants them to be blown up by the security forces as suspected bombs. He will see plenty of armed soldiers around; nothing to worry about - they are there to keep everyone safe.

Thank you, he is travelling from the UK.

He will not be required to use public transport. There is an organised mini bus taking them to and from the hotel to where they are working daily and they will only be going to eat somewhere within walking distance.

He will be working every day, 12 hour shifts so no time to really do anything else apart from eat and sleep, which is a shame!

Thank you again.

There will be a heat wave next week with high temperatures in Haifa over 30C every day. The evenings should be more pleasant, but if he likes shorts he won't be the only one.

If he has any nut or sesame allergies, that could be a problem, otherwise, the food is great, with a lot of vegetables and salads (w middle eastern spices) always available. And Israeli wine is excellent! The hotel is likely to have a very generous breakfast, he shouldn't miss it. His most casual clothing will be fine unless his specific industry and/or his colleagues also visiting have a dress code, not dependent on them being in Israel. I hope he gets even a little bit of time for some exploration - if he is at all a nature person, it's a beautiful area for hiking or other outdoor activities in the area.

As mentioned the country is informal. No suit and tie is required when working in offices. You do not mention what type of work he will be working in. Shorts are not acceptable in some office situations. If he is working in a factory only long trousers. If working outdoors shorts are okay, but closed shoes and depending on where - long trousers (it is snake season).

Some Haifa recommendations:

Fattoush (German Colony) - local food and excellent atmosphere

Hummus Berdichev (Carmel Centre) - imho best place to eat hummus, with a lot of sides available. Note that here hummus is a meal, not just a side dip. If he likes aubergine, try the "sabich" hummus.

Falafel Hanasi (also Carmel Centre) - imho best falafel

There are a few beachside bars/restaurants at Carmel Beach just by the train station. It's a nice area to spend an evening.

I'll offer an alternative to shorts. I wear very light breathable sunprotected clothing both pants/ shirts. In addition ensure he brings a good quality hat and sunglasses and ideally he should bring sunscreen which is more expensive in Israel.

I prefer Columbia brand sun protected clothing but there are other brands. The Columbia long pants have a zipper that can be converted to " shorts"
