Trisha is a lady who has it all - the voice, the looks, the personality and the brains. Trisha used her considerable intelligence and knowledge of music to select an outstanding selection of songs, covering every base - old carols (Away in a manger), classic wintry Chrismas songs (Let it snow!, Chestnuts roasting on an open fire), obscure gems (Hank Snow's Reindeer boogie, suitably updated), a blues number (Santa Claus is back in town, originally written for Elvis), a country classic (The sweetest gift), a song rapidly becoming a country Christmas classic (There's a new kid in town) and a great new song (Take a walk through Bethlehem). The other two songs, Sweet little Jesus boy and It wasn't his child, are also excellent choices by Trisha.
Having used her brains to come up with such a well-balanced set of songs, Trisha used her lovely voice to deliver them impeccably. While Trisha's roots are in country music, her voice should appeal far beyond that base. Trisha has a warm, soothing style, yet she can rock where appropriate.
If you can give it dedicated attention, there is much to discover, but we all know that Christmas is not like that for most people. Don't worry - this album also works well as background music.
This is one of the best (of many) Christmas albums I've come across - at it's Amazon.com price, this must be one of the best Christmas bargains of all time. I originally paid full price and considered it money well spent. You can buy it for less than seven dollars.

Trisha Yearwood's "The Sweetest Gift" is indeed a sweet gift to the listener. Her gorgeously smooth and elastic voice is complemented by powerful interpretive gifts, and she puts both to use on this album. The album opens with "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," a 1934 tune that evokes the unknowableness of God--it's a treasure. The very next selection--"Reindeer Boogie" by the great Ernest Tubb--crashes headlong into some finger-poppin' good boogie music. It's a treat!
"Take A Walk Through Bethlehem" is a contemporary tune that quietly asserts the strength of religious feeling in the sometimes-too-commercial Christmas season. It has a subtle gospel feel to it that's completely apt for the song. The Leiber and Stoller classic "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" is a riot--it has the propulsive rhythm and sexy delivery of a striptease, complemented by the subtle innuendos in the lyrics. It's a hoot, and a terrific song to boot.
"Away In A Manger" is quiet and sweet and calm--just as it should be. On "The Sweetest Gift"--a splendid 1942 song about a mother going to see her jailed son--Yearwood is backed by her sister, Beth Yearwood Bernard, and it's almost eerie how much they sound alike. What a great idea to use her sister on a song the two grew up singing together! All around a great album--give it a listen!

This Christmas CD is just wonderfull. I am a huge Trisha fan and have everything she has recorded. This is always the first Holiday CD I put on. My favorite is "Take a walk thru Bethlehem". Get this one, you won't be sorry.

まあー如何にもクリスマスってのが最後の超有名曲くらいで…あとはCCMと言って差し支えない、効果音的な鐘や鈴の音も無く、どこかから少年合唱団を呼んできてる訳でもない…地味と言えば地味、何とも味わい深いアルバムです。

そこで絶妙のアクセントになってくるのがアップテンポな二曲、《サンタが町に来た》(有名な、あの曲ではない(笑))はコテコテの「ど」ブルースでトリーシャ得意の喉から押し出すようなパワフルな歌い方に拍手喝采を送りたい。ロカビリーで時々、声を巻き上げるようにしゃくりあげるのも素敵。もはや彼女やリーバ・マッキンタイヤーは伝統芸能としてのカントリーの最後の世代かもしれないね。

で…私的なベストトラックは(2)の聖ヨゼフをモチーフにした曲とアルバムタイトル曲。どちらも涙が出そうなくらい歌詞が良いバラードですね。

(2)はプロテスタントが多いアメリカでは珍しい聖母マリアの無原罪の宿りを認めている点でカトリックな私としては感情移入できる。その上で養父ヨゼフの人としての強さ、イエスに与えた影響の大きさを歌う。
「彼は木を手に大工として育ち、木に手を打ち付けられて死んだ」っていうくだり、トリーシャの切々たる歌い方に彼女の信仰の強さが伺えるね。(涙)

《スイーテストギフト》は、もう、ただただ涙するしかない…まあー去年、私も母を亡くしてますし…いやあホントに母親の笑顔が何よりですね。解っちゃいるけど罪を犯してしまう馬鹿息子の歌です…この曲、カーペンターズの《デスペラード》なみに素晴らしい出来です。

I only knew a couple of Yearwood songs when I saw the Passion Live. I was amazed by her Mary performance and began amassing her extensive cd recordings, This one was among the first album I bought. The cd is a mix of traditional songs expertly sung , a couple of honkytonk friendly numbers ( Santa's Back in Town and Reindeer Boogie and some takes on the Christmas story that are both clever an moving..." It Wasn't His Child","There's A New Kid in Town" and "Take a Walk Through Bethlehem" re focus the listener on the Nativity and the true meaning of the season. A cover of Linda Ronstadt's The Sweetest Gift is just that. And the updated lyric version of Sweet Little Jesus Boy is a stunning opener for this little gem of holiday cheer. The only buyer's remorse I have is missing out on this gem of holiday cheer for the past 22 years.....her voice is like no other....
