I'm stronger than every opponent you've ever faced, because I am every opponent you've ever faced.
—The Chameleon to Po while shapeshifting, Kung Fu Panda 4

The Chameleon is the main antagonist of Kung Fu Panda 4.[3] She was a sorceress[1][2] with the ability to shapeshift into others as well as steal their spiritual chi energy to mimic their abilities.

As a young aspiring kung fu student, the Chameleon was ridiculed for her small size and rejected from multiple schools that she taught herself in the ways of shapeshifting, sorcery and surviving off the streets instead, vowing to one day become the greatest and most powerful kung fu master. She eventually gained enough power and influence to build up an army and overtake Juniper City, having their crime bosses pay tribute to her. Realizing she could only look and sound like other masters but not perform their kung fu, she plotted to steal their chi which harnessed their abilities. With the help of her influence and resources, she obtained Po's Staff of Wisdom to capture and steal the chi from several powerful kung fu masters from the Spirit Realm. She was ultimately defeated by Po and Zhen before she was taken into the Spirit Realm by Tai Lung.[4]

Biography[]

Early years[]

Although there is not much known about The Chameleon's past, it is stated by herself that she came from humble beginnings, much like Po. When she was young, she wanted to become a kung fu master to gain respect and power. In an attempt to fulfill her dream, she visited various training halls to find a mentor, only to be rejected and kicked out of each one, saying she was too small and lowly.

Desperate and embittered, The Chameleon took a different path. Instead of relentlessly following her dream like what Po did, she choose sorcery as an alternative way of her life. There, she learned how to shapeshift into other creatures, including the villain masters that Po has defeated, although she could just look and sound like the other masters but can't fight like them.

She eventually gained enough power and influence to rule Juniper City, to the point the criminal bosses there afraid of her and gained her own komodo army.

At some point of her life, during a parade on the city, The Chameleon met Zhen, who was trying to steal one of her jewelry from her tree-shaped throne. Due to the fox's bravery, The Chameleon took her as her student. She took care of her, taught her fighting skill and rules of the street, though sometimes The Chameleon would also act abusive towards Zhen.

The Chameleon first appears in the beginning of the movie disguised as Tai Lung and she scared off workers at a mine who went to Po and told him they claimed they saw Tai Lung. However, Zhen later tells Po about The Chameleon.

Then, she appears in the Center of Juniper City. Disguised as one of the council, she tells the council, who underestimated her, about herself (The Chameleon). She then reveals her true self and demands tribute from them. When one of the council refused, after she increased the price, she transformed into an elephant and threw him down the stairs.

Later, when her army captures Po, he trusts Zhen and gives her the Staff of Wisdom, but she gave the staff to The Chameleon. She then summoned different Kung-Fu masters from the spirit realm, including Tai Lung, Shen and Kai. Then, she absorbed their chi and locked them in cages.

Then, Po comes to attack her and she first started off transformed as Shen, but then transformed into different kung-fu masters until Zhen came to help Po. The Chameleon claimed that "it was not fair", combining the chi of the Kung-fu masters she stolen and transforming into a chimera. Po would later ride her back and slam her to the ground when she transformed back into herself before transforming to Po. They fought and she managed to trap Po, but Zhen finally uses the Skadoosh move taught to her by Po and knocks her off. Zhen then tries freeing Po, but he freed himself. As Zhen and Po had a conversation, Chameleon tried to sneak up to attack them, but Po uses the staff to use the Spladoof! move again, this time freeing the Kung fu masters back into the spirit realm. Tai Lung grabbed the Chameleon and took her to the spirit realm with him.

Personality[]

The Chameleon is an arrogant, cunning, devious, manipulative, ambitious, intimidating, charismatic and bitterly cynical individual who craves respect and power. She generally presents herself as calm and affable, speaking softly and politely to the Juniper City crime bosses even after they offended her. Underneath, this façade, she is utterly ruthless, cruel and vicious. She cares about no one except herself, even using her apprentice, Zhen, as a pawn in her schemes, and desires to expand her already powerful empire across the rest of the world. Notably, she giggles sadistically when she sends Po falling to his apparent death, and later, during her final battle with Po, she tries to bite him twice, showing signs of animalistic bloodlust.

The Chameleon's evil and bitter nature and obsession with power, respect and kung fu stem from her background of being mocked and underestimated by society for her small size, and rejected from every kung fu school she attempted to attend for the same reason. Because of this, she desires to become the greatest kung fu master in history by stealing the signature moves of every kung-fu master from the Spirit Realm.

Fighting style and abilities[]

The Chameleon can shapeshift into anyone, including mimicking their voices. The appearance is almost the exact of the person she shapeshifts into, although she shapeshift into whoever she desires. The appearance is nearly identical, except her skin will always remain scaly e.g when disguised as Tai Lung, his hair tufts on his cheeks become little spikes instead. She can also uses her tongue to copy her victims' abilities and physical features.

With her tongue, she can use it to rob fighting styles from spirit masters including Tai Lung, Shen, Kai, Master Scorpion, and Master Elephant, Master Osprey, Master Cobra, Master Bull, and other master villains. With that being said, she possesses their fighting skills and can use this to her advantage when in battle.

She also has the ability to transform into a horrific gigantic chimera-like monster, formed from the combination of every master villains' aspect. In this form, she can fly.

Relationships[]

Zhen[]

The Chameleon initially trusted Zhen due to what she claimed was "her bravery" and she was the one who sent Zhen to steal the Staff of Wisdom from Po.

However, Zhen later betrayed her and defeated her.

Clothing[]

The Chameleon wears a long silken gown with a primarily blue-green exterior, though there are wine-red accents around the chest, on the tabard, and around the neck. The inside of her gown is also red, and the ends of her collar are brown and lined in gold, as are her pauldrons. She also wears a golden crown on her casque. When she shapeshifts, her clothing expands and changes into the exact clothes that others wear when shapeshifting into them, with a slightly different coloration.

Trivia[]

  • The Chameleon is both the first female and first reptilian main antagonist of the Kung Fu Panda films.
    • She is also the second main antagonist in the film series not voiced by an English actor (American actor J.K. Simmons as Kai being the first).
    • She is also the first main antagonist voiced by an African-American.
  • According to Head of Character Animation Sean Sexton, the Chameleon had a rig with 8,130 controls to animate her shapeshifting movements. This makes her the most technologically advanced character ever created by DreamWorks.[source?]
  • Despite being a chameleon, the Chameleon lacks the turret-like eyes that real life chameleons have, which allow their eyes to move independently.
    • However, in one scene, it is shown that the Chameleon can still move her eyes independently despite having regular eyes.
    • Chameleons are native to Africa rather than China in real life. However, the only species of chameleon that lives in Asia in real life is the Indian chameleon, and even then it only lives in South India and Sri Lanka.
  • The Chameleon is the only Kung Fu Panda character to be associated with all four major color motifs, not only those carried by previous villains (blue/Tai Lung, red/Shen, green/Kai) but also gold, the "heroic" color of the series.
  • According to the Kung Fu Panda 4 novel adaptation, it is mentioned that Tai Lung and the rest of the masters play jump rope with the Chameleon's tongue in the Spirit Realm after the events of the film.
  • The Chameleon's actual name is never stated and she is only referred to as "The Chameleon", making her the first villain to have no known name.
  • To add on, it's noted that while the Chameleon was rejected for her small size, numerous other famed kung fu masters, such as Mantis and Chicken are also comparable in size or even smaller than her.
  • The Chameleon is the only villain in the movies who did not fight The Furious Five, and the second villain to have no interaction or history with Shifu or Master Oogway (After Lord Shen).

I too came from humble beginnings and dreamed of becoming something more. I wanted respect and power. I wanted to be a master of kung fu. I was turned away from every training hall I went to. They would say I was too small, too lowly, and that kung fu was not my destiny. And so, I chose a different path...sorcery. I grew, I excelled, and I got everything I ever dreamed of.
