Celebrity iCloud Accounts Compromised, Private Pictures Leaked

If ever there was an advert for using a strong password and two-factor authentication, this is it.

Last night, while Britain slept and the internet went through its weird phase, a lot of photos that seem to have been taken from celebrities iCloud accounts were downloaded and leaked onto 4Chan, the notorious imageboard. In the excitement, and thanks to no doubt massive increase in traffic, 4Chan got knocked off the internet briefly.

Does this mean that iCloud accounts are insecure, or there's an Apple-wide security breach? Unlikely, it's far simpler an explanation that those celebrities were either using weak passwords, or they had bad security questions in place. So if you are an iCloud user, don't panic, but now is as good a time as any to beef up that password. If you're worried about remembering complex passwords, invest in a password manager like mSecure or LastPass to help you.

Of course the images are out there now, and nothing can change that, which is a stark reminder to be careful about the sort of images you allow your phone to store on the cloud. While we all like to think our data is safe, leaks like this prove that we're never very far from an embarrassment.
