Biography

Name: Philippa Roët
Birth: She was born around 1346 in Hainaut Province (today's Belgium). [1]
Father: Payn (Paon) (Paganus) de Roet of Hainaut
Mother: Unknown
Marriage: September 1366 to Geoffrey Chaucer, in London, Middlesex, England. They had met as children when both were in service to Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster, at which time she was listed in the records as "Philippa Pan" (possibly in reference to the name of her father: Paon.) [2] [3] [1]
4 Children:
  1. Elizabeth, b: ca. 1365 - became a Catholic nun
  2. Thomas, b: 1367, MP for Oxfordshire; Speaker of the Commons
  3. Possibly Agnes, Lady-in-waiting 1399 at Henry IV's coronation
  4. Lewis, b: ca. 1380
Courtier: Elizabeth of Ulster died in 1363, after which Philippa joined the service of Queen Philippa, who died on 15 August 1369, when Philippa Chaucer received mourning livery from her estate. Not long afterward, she joined the household of the Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, where her sister was employed, often in those later years in Lincolnshire. In 1386, she was one of several in the ducal household inducted into the prestigious confraternity of Lincoln Cathedral. [4]
Death: Philippa's semi-annual annuity was paid to her husband on 18 June 1387, but there is no record of the next payment, due 7 November, implying that she died some time after 18 June. [5]
