Trying to locate inn we stayed in the late 1960s in Garmisch

Trying to locate an inn I stayed in in the late 60s. We stayed in a "typical" 3-story Bavarian inn in Garmisch. I awoke in the morning to a man walking up the mountain with his cows (their bells ringing) right outside my 3rd floor window. The inn was perpendicular to the wide path up the mountain. The front faced the east, I think.

Would like to stay in this same inn again, if you can help me locate it! All help appreciated! THANK YOU!

Hi daynacrow,

I'm afraid that is just not enough information -- there are mountains on three sides of Garmisch, so your inn could have been almost anywhere in town.

Can you find a map of Garmisch and try to find the location more closely? If you don't have a paper map, take a look at google maps to find one. It would be helpful if you could locate the inn in relation to Marienplatz in Garmisch or maybe to Ludwigstrasse in Partenkirchen, or to the nearest church.

Hope to hear more!

Thank you for your comments. I have looked at every existing hotel photo on trip advisor. I have looked at maps. I was 16 at the time and my aunt and uncle remember less than me. This is truly all I can remember, so maybe this can't go further. I wasn't driving at the time, either, to help with streets or other landmarks.

Do you remember where you walked to? Any restaurants in the neighborhood?

Also, Trip Advisor only has a percentage of all the inns and apartments that are available in Garmisch. To see ALL of them, look at

No restaurants. I only remember driving down a main street and stopping to watch figure skaters at an (Olympic?) ice rink, practicing their routines.

I tried your link for all hotels and inns and did not recognize any, despite viewing all photos inside each hotel. I found one comment on the history of Garmisch-Partenkirschen which said: "Early mornings and late afternoons in pleasant weather often find local traffic stopped while the dairy cows are herded to and from the nearby mountain meadows." This is what I experienced. Are there certain areas where this occurs? That's where I need to be looking! Maybe to know that and then try Google Street View would work.??

Again, the mountains are on three sides of Garmisch -- the Wank on the northeast, the Kreuzeck and Alpspitze on the south, and the Kramer on the northwest. The cows go up & down to the meadows from all three sides. Does the street name St Martinstrasse sound familiar?

Garmisch didn't used to have the pedestrian zones that it has now, and I don't know when they were added. Some photos of the 1950s show normal roads where now there is the pedestrian zone. So, it's difficult to know what was a main street in 1960.

But if you were near the Olympic Eissport-Zentrum (Olympic ice skating rink), that might mean you were on the south side of town. You may want to look around the Klammstrasse, Alpspitzstrasse, and St. Martinstrasse. There are wonderful, wide fields dotted with brown huts on the other side of St. Martinstrasse. Did you cross rr tracks or see trains?

No recollection of RR tracks. Uncle finally thinks he remembers the hotel was named for a general or some military man and that perhaps the hotel was torn down. Does that help with where it was? Uncle thinks maybe it was on the edge of what was town back then (1969). Thank you again for dredging your memory bank! -Dayna

Hi again,

The only hotels in town with a general in the name would be US Army hotels. Yes, one of them was torn down two years ago, but one is still standing (though unused). The General Patton Hotel is still standing, but it's empty.

ok, I stand corrected.

One US Army hotel was town down two years ago, but I can't remember the name of it.

The General Abrams Hotel building is still standing, but it is now a military facility providing housing for the people who work at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. Here is a link:

http://www.thirdreichruins.com/garmisch.htm

If you scroll down to the bottom right of the page, there is a photo of the hotel as it stood in 1970.

If I can think of the name of the hotel that was town down, I'll post it.

BTW, yes, the Abrams is at the edge of town on the north side, at Brauhausstrasse, just south of the Bayernhalle. The Kramer mountain begins just yards to the north of it.

The General Patton hotel is on the south side of town, just a few streets away from the fields at St Martinstrasse..
