Function/Description The Wildlife Sanctuary Board maintains Island Park for quiet recreation and environmental education in accordance with the 1985 agreement between the Michigan Land Trust Fund and the City of Alpena. It is the City's only natural park. In addition to encouraging use by school and community groups, special efforts are made to prevent erosion and emphasize indigenous plants. The Board promotes wise use of the 500-acre wildlife sanctuary and the surrounding land. Island Park is part of the Bi-Path system. Long range plans include a boardwalk with educational signage and an interpretive center in the adjoining roadside park.
