Abstract
In Kohler-Hausmann's Misdemeanorland, we navigate the courthouses of New York City, where the fruits of broken windows policing's labors land. The empirical and theoretical account adds to and recasts both descriptive and theoretical understandings of the legacy of broken windows policing, of misdemeanor justice, and of court work more generally. It also suggests important ways in which prevailing criminal justice reform priorities should perhaps be redirected. And finally, it points up deep pathologies in the role of the defense lawyer in high-volume misdemeanor practice - pathologies that have been little noted in the literature and that are amply deserving of exploration in further scholarship.
