The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel, while celebrated for its central location near Times Square, often disappoints guests with its atmosphere and rooms that are considered outdated and poorly maintained. Cleanliness is a point of contention, with reports of lackluster conditions varying among visitors. The service quality is inconsistent, with experiences of staff helpfulness contrasting with complaints of unprofessional behavior. Additionally, the hotel's value is frequently criticized due to hidden fees and issues with amenities, including malfunctioning air conditioning and noise disruptions.

Myself & my family (Mother, aunts & cousins) booked this hotel through a Travel agency. We were aware that we weren't booking a high end hotel and were happy based on location. Upon arrival at lunch time we were pleasantly surprised that our rooms were immediately available.
While the staff as a whole are friendly we had some issues. On our first morning i called reception to request additional towels as there were 4 of us sharing with only enough towels for 2-3 people. It took 2 more calls and 45 minutes to actually receive the towels requested. We had an adjoining room to our mothers but the door was stuck and it took 2 calls again to get it fixed.

The hotel has a nice reception but far too much air-freshener is used. I have mild asthma and struggled on multiple occasions when walking through reception. The floor we were on required updating, it had loose carpet & peeling wallpaper. Our room was also out dated. the beds were clean. The bathroom was clean but the bath was cracked in 2 places and felt unsafe when showering. We also had an issue 2 days in to our trip where the bath started filling from the drain, we requested maintenance to fix it & it was promptly fixed.
Lastly the cleaners were quite good except on 1 day where we had ordered take out the night before & nothing was cleared form the room even though they cleaned the rest of the room which was disappointing (although they may have thought we wanted to keep it)

Overall the hotel was adequate for what we were looking for but does require a makeover or at least a fresh coat of paint throughout.

I was very concerned about this hotel after reading the reviews online.
In our 3 day experience we were surprised and found that honestly the hotel wasn't that bad.
Check in was quick and our room was ready instantly. We paid $40 a night in resort fee's on our credit card and that was it.
Every member of staff we encountered in 3 days were so polite and helpful, especially the bell boy who helped at check in he was fantastic!
Yes people live in this hotel and we encountered a few in the lifts but they were friendly and a few offered us advice about the city.

Our room was on the 11th floor, so can only comment on this. Our room was on the backside of the hotel and overlooked Ellen's stardust diner. The corridor from the lift to our room was fine, clean and none of the carpet was misplaced or torn in anyway.
Our room was clean and smelt really good on arrival and it continued to be cleaned well everyday. Our bed was really comfortable and our heating worked fine. There was no peeling wallpaper or chipped furniture, and the bathroom was spotless and we felt very comfortable here. The longest we waited for a lift was about 1 minute.

Yes the hotel is not modern and the furniture is dark but for the price we paid and the location we could overlook this. The only negative thing about our hotel stay was our curtain didnt fully shut next to the wall and there was a billboard right opposite which shone into our room, we quickly solved this by putting the ice bucket against it then it was pitch after that!

As we were always out of the hotel at 6am and back early before 9pm maybe we avoided alot of the things people say in these reviews.

But honestly as a young family travelling with a 3 year old we were pleasantly suprised and as it stands from our experience if we visit the city again and we could guarantee we got the same room i would be happy to return

Whilst the hotel is not the Hilton it is nice enough to enjoy your stay we stayed in room 2201 which was the top floor the view of time Square was amazing yes the walk on the way to your room is a bit shabby but the rooms are nice . The cleaning staff are lovely and when going to the front desk deal with Paolo or Mohammad no one else Paolo was a great guy went out his way to make you feel welcomed and in my opinion should be managing the hotel .. as for the resort fees they can and should be waived as there is no resort we had no breakfast included in our stay there is no pool and most water machines did not work so buy bottled from 7/11 were it's 150 a bottle don't buy on time Square were it's 5 bucks a bottle ... All in all a great holiday I would return and would make sure I stay on top floor

Firstly, this hotel is in an AMAZING location!! Can not fault this.

Our booking said includes breakfast (which was one of our deciding factors); however, we were told they don’t include/have breakfast.

Last night my friend was really sick & therefore we required new bedding & fresh towels. At 2.30pm we visited Reception & asked for our room to be refreshed, while we were out; he said ok & made a call as we left. We got back an hour later & it had not been done as yet. We called Reception to follow up, they advised the PM shift we’re going to do this. We waited patiently.....at 6pm we were still waiting & called again. We’ve been sitting in bed with no sheets or blanket or towels.....finally they’ve just brought up fresh sheets, blanket & towels (7pm) & we’re now expected to make our own bed.

This hotel is ok.....but hasn’t been great.

My daughter and I went to New York for 5 days with LoveHolidays and there are things I must say about this hotel...
Firstly, it’s fine for school trips and group bookings who want to see the city on a budget. It is more like a youth hostel than a hotel. If you expect modern electrics, cleanliness & civil staff in a hotel then look elsewhere. Secondly, breakfast is a piece of fruit & a pastry in a paper bag with a hot drink in a ‘to go’ cup.. Lastly, don’t think about staying here in the summer as they do not have air conditioning in the rooms. We went in winter and the room still got too hot so I turned the thermostat on the wall down, only to have the temperature go up! On asking Reception to sort it out, a clearly stressed chap turned up who tore us off a strip for touching the dial. He shouted at us that there is NO A/C and if we wanted to cool the room we had to turn the heating off and open the windows... as our room was above 7th Avenue the noise was horrendous all night.
The bathroom was kind of ok but the loo paper was not replaced when it ran out. The curtains were filthy and the electricity was a 4-gang plug socket on the single bedside table in between the two beds. The room was dingy & the lamps & their switches were archaic. On the plus side, I have to say, the beds & pillows were comfortable.
We had a final bill put under our door during the last night, which demanded an extra $17 a night to cover the facilities we had used I.e. WiFi & the use of the telephone to make long distance calls (who still does that?).
The ONLY thing going for this place is the location, as it is seconds from Times Sq. but watch out for the Topline bus tour guides who lurk outside like waiting hyenas, if you fall for it and buy their tickets then be prepared for long waits for buses and the headphones which will deliver repetitive songs and travelogues. There must be better ways to get around the city.

This hotel is average to describe it simply. The location of the hotel is great a few minutes walk from Time Square and right near 5th Ave for shopping and has everything around which tourist needs. However, the customer service which we receive is terrible, we had attitude from the receptionists and managers when concerning the fact that our room key wouldn’t work for our room so we couldn’t get into our room after a long day of traveling until at least 15 minutes of them taking us up to the room, this problem when then only fixed 2 days later. The room themselves are okay they do the job and give you a place to sleep before you get up and go out for the day but after looking at the rooms, they have fire alarms which are mostly hanging off the walls and just not what you expect from a hotel like this. Further more one of my family members was electrocuted by a light switch. We reported this and they said and I quote “Oh, that can happen when you wear gloves”. And can I say at this time they was not wearing gloves and the way which they handled the situation was extremely unprofessional.

Just home from nyc stayed in this hotel for my sons xmas present hes 11 and also my mother in laws 60 birthday this is my 5th time in New York this hotel is the perfect location right up a bit from times square few blocks up from the big m&m shop in times square the lobby is lovely and clean with crystal chandeliers hanging everywhere ect the reception staff were very nice no problems there... only complaint about the staff is the smallish doorman out front flagged us a taxi down to go to macys and tried to charge us $30 we refused and got our own from outside the hotel and the meter ran to $10 we were obviously being ripped off and he was going to take the $20 for himself, as it was my mother in laws birthday on checking in I reminded the staff and after a few moments they russelled up a paper bag with some chocolates no attempt at upgrade ect as I have experienced in other hotels for my birthday a few years ago the Edison hotel upgraded me and my husband to a business suite and we came into the room with champagne chocolates glasses to keep and a keepsake letter which I still have. The rooms at the manhattan are what let's this hotel down to be honest I was very embarrassed that I had booked this threw recommendation of the travel agents room faults as follows:
Very dated decor
Wallpaper literally peeling of the walls
Paint work pure yellow
Windows stinking havent been cleaned in years they actually need replaced
Cannot open windows for air
Dirty carpet
Dirty bath tub and sinks ect
The door to the rooms are cracked broken looks like a hostel type room
My in laws room was the same
The beds are awful not solid at all and feel very flimsy :(
I normally have a good nights sleep in New York after all the walking each day this was the 1st hotel where I had badly broken sleep even after walking over 30 miles each day
I have stayed in the Edison hotel on times square, the skyline hotel, grand central hotel and I can honestly say they were 100 times better. If this hotel does a total return to the rooms it would be an amazing hotel.
Also as obviously going shopping ect everyday we locked our purchases in our suitcases each day when we went out and the night before our last my father in laws suitcase lock had been tampered with/damaged in they're room as if someone had tried to pick the lock which made me feel awful. I'm not such a fussy person but even this was a step down for me :( would never return to this hotel.

We Stayed at the Manhattan in November / December 2019 a surprise for my 50th Birthday, we stayed in an Executive room which I have to say was beautiful, after reading reviews of this hotel I was a bit dubious but was pleasantly surprised. The room was very clean, has a lovely big comfortable bed with beautiful white bedding, HUGE Flatscreen TV, the room came fully equipped with Mini Fridge, Nespresso machine with all the condiments Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate & Milks, has a nice modern bathroom with a big shower, it’s the biggest but plenty of room for a couple, because the rooms are situated on Time Square & Broadway the blessing was the remote controlled black out blind, it’s definitely needed with all the bright lights on Time Square and believe me you can’t see a thing they’re that good, the view from our room was great we could see right down Broadway. Breakfast comes in the way of continental at the coffee shop in the lobby of the hotel so nothing fancy but adequate, thankfully we didn’t experience any of the bad things it seems quite a lot of others did, we had a fantastic first time in New York and his hotel really helped make it special

Just back from 4 nights at this hotel. First impressions were good, beautiful building and the reception area is clean and welcoming.

The gentleman at the front door was helpful and kind as was the lady who checked us in. We didn’t have much other interaction with any other staff apart from housekeeping who were always polite and we did ask a gentleman at reception on the first night a question about the TV (only because we arrived late and wouldn’t be going out that night)and he wasn’t very helpful and brushed us off with a vague answer.

After the reception as many other reviews say the hotel hallways and rooms are quite run down. Our hotel room on 12th floor was fine but is in desperate need of renovation (I understand this has started on some of the floors and rooms).

Our room was fine, the bed was clean and comfortable and bathroom was clean. However, the rooms could all do with a deep clean as could the hallways. The hallways have marks all over the walls and carpets and the room doors need a paint. In the room it was clean enough to stay in but looking at around the smoke detector and skirting boards etc it all needs a good scrub.

At check in you need to pay deposit of £200 from a credit card. When checking in we were told we pay the resort fees on check out and you can use cash or another card. When we checked out they had said they are taking it from the card they took the deposit from, after reading numerous reviews about people trying to get money back from the hotel when they wanted to use another card we just left it, so be aware of this.

The elevators will also on occasion give you and electric shock when you go to call it or select a floor.

Prior to staying we also emailed them and used messenger a few times and they just don’t reply.

We were lucky we had read previous reviews of the hotel and weren’t expecting much but don’t expect much. All in all the experience was fine, a good base to explore NY as it’s a great location but wouldn’t stay again.

The tourist tax would be seen on most any travel site purchase on the final payment booking page, but there is a fee in most hotels, including this on that you don't see. It's the "resort fee" From memory this one was $40 per night, you can negotiate that fee in person, but if you book from a discount site, it's likely they won't remove it.
